The Kansas City Chiefs are delighted to welcome back their Super Bowl LVIII winner Mecole Hardman from free agency but could this pose a challenge to one player?

Brett Veach was asked about the possibility of Mecole Hardman signing with the Chiefs after his history-making catch in overtime to break San Francisco’s hearts.

After adding Marquise Brown and rookie Xavier Worthy, the Kansas City Chiefs GM stated they were focused on their younger talent but would consider the option.

Hardman re-signs with the Chiefs after Brett Veach kept the option open

Over a month later, the franchise has signed Hardman to a one-year deal after he was biding his time in free agency.

Hardman is a three-time Super Bowl winner with the Chiefs but departed on a new challenge last offseason.

In 2023, Hardman started his new life in the Big Apple with the New York Jets but things turned sour quickly.

The 26-year-old tumbled down the pecking order and caught just one pass in five games before cutting ties with the Jets.

Moreover, the Chiefs executed a trade with the Jets and Hardman repaid the faith that they had shown in him by delivering the blockbuster moment of glory.

Rashee Rice and the kickoff situation could be reasons by Hardman was re-signed

The Kansas City Chiefs are now stacked in their wide receiver department but Rashee Rice’s off-field situation, which is under investigation, could have influenced the signing.

Additionally, Hardman could have a role to play on special teams after the new kickoff rule is set to be introduced.

The XFL-inspired rule will encourage teams to return the football on kickoff after the NFL has seen a rapid decline in this area of the game.

Therefore, Hardman’s arrival could see him become a key asset to Dave Toub and also continue his responsibility on offense.

Nonetheless, his return could spell trouble for the out-of-favour Kadarius Toney who has been absent from offseason training with mandatory minicamp around the corner.

Toney endured a dreadful 2023 season after several key mistakes were made

Toney had a disastrous 2023 campaign and the wide receiver was forced to man the sideline at the tail end of the season despite not being injured, as he claimed.

In the week 14 match-up against the Buffalo Bills, the New York Giants first-rounder lined up offside to rule out a last-minute touchdown to deny them victory.

The following week, Toney bobbled a perfect pass from Patrick Mahomes against the New England Patriots.

His future on the Chiefs roster is unprecedented but Brett Veach has come out and praised the receiver in the last month.

Furthermore, the reacquisition of Hardman will now put further pressure on Toney

Chiefs expert believes Hardman’s arrival means Toney will have to fight for his spot

Cole DeRuse discussed the recent business by the Chiefs and believes it spelled danger for the struggling receiver.

“Toney, he’s on his last year, 2.5 million dollar cap it. You can move on if he’s not panning out. So, I do actually think Kadarius Toney will have to fight to earn his roster spot,” DeRuse said on the how bout those Chiefs podcast.

Toney has a first-round fifth-year option on a rookie contract but his performances will not justify the Chiefs activating the clause.

Moreover, the Toney will have to fight for his space on the final roster with the Chiefs having a surplus of receivers to consider.

Ultimately, the 25-year-old could find himself as a free agent in 2025 and may struggle to find many teams vying for his signature.
