Patrick Mahomes told reporters after the Chargers win that Travis Kelce’s ability to recognise coverages is ‘Madden-like’, and that these kind of ‘monster games’ will make him a Hall of Famer one day.

Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce were at their devastating best in the Week 7 win against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday. Mahomes totaled 424 passing yards, four touchdowns and one interception on 32 of 42 passing as he helped the Chiefs move to 6-1 for the season.

Kelce and Mahomes were too much for Chargers defense

It was the reigning MVP’s fifth career game with over 400 passing yards and four passing touchdowns – tying him third with Drew Brees for most such games in league history. Only Peyton Manning (eight) and Dan Marino (seven) have more.

Mahomes’ almost telepathic connection with Travis Kelce was on display for most of the game. The two connected for nine catches, 143 yards and a touchdown in the first half alone. Kelce ended the game with 12 passes for 179 yards and a score. The Kansas duo recorded their 50th regular season touchdown during the game, making them the fourth best partnership in NFL history.

‘Like he’s playing Madden’: Patrick Mahomes on Chiefs star’s ability to read coverages

Kelce became just the second tight end in history behind Shannon Sharpe to record five games of 150-plus receiving yards. He now has has 31 catches for 370 yards and two touchdowns in his last three games.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Mahomes said Kelce’s ability to recognise coverage is almost ‘Madden-like’.

“It’s almost like he’s playing Madden,” Mahomes said. “He can read the coverage and stop in the windows and be open and be on the same page as me at all times and so he did a great job.

“I think the way he recognises coverages is probably even better [than ever], he’s played against every single team and every coverage and attempt to try and take him away, he’s able to dissect it on the fly.”

Mahomes added, “He’s doing great at finding ways of getting himself open and having these monster games.

“It seems like he does it week in and week out and that’s why he’s the player that he is and he’ll be a Hall of Famer one day.”

It was a complete performance from the Chiefs

Head coach Andy Reid also echoed Mahomes’ sentiments. “He and Pat are on the same page, that’s a challenge for defenses. This isn’t a secret, they’re working on those thing,” Reid said.

“He might be getting better with age!”

Despite the impressive offense, it was a complete team performance from the Chiefs against the Chargers. The defense sacked Justin Herbert five times and forced two interceptions on the Chargers quarterback.

The defense has managed to hold opponents to fewer than 21 points this season in all seven games this season. The 20-21 loss to the Detroit Lions in Week 1 remains the most amount of points they have given up.
