Kansas City Chiefs sign two new players as 2024 season opener approaches

September is knocking on the door and the Kansas City Chiefs has arrived at a critical moment in the season.

Kansas City finished their three pre-season games with three defeats. And some injuries along the way, i.e. players who were already in the process of recovering and others who were injured in matchups.

Hollywood Brown is the big concern at the start of the season. He suffered a sternoclavicular joint dislocation and will be out of the squad for the first few weeks.

He is expected to miss KC’s first two games, against the Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals, which should be the franchise’s toughest opponents.

In addition, the deadline for the organisation to have the 53-man roster ready is this Tuesday (27) by 3 pm (Missouri time).

So, of the 90 players on the roster, 37 will be waived. And some will eventually sign to remain on the practice squad.

A WR rejoins the Chiefs

An old acquaintance from the 2022 season returned to KC.

Juju Smith-Schuster is the Chiefs’ new backup for this year. The receiver returns to the franchise where he won the only Super Bowl of his career.

Back in 2022, he led the team among wide receivers with 933 yards on 78 receptions and three touchdowns.

During the victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII, the pass-catcher contributed 53 yards on seven receptions.

After winning the title, the player signed a three-year contract with the New England Patriots for the 2023 season.

However, he suffered from injuries and inconsistencies during the Foxborough franchise’s campaign and was let go this month after recording 260 yards in 11 games.

Considering the dead cap involved in him being cut by the Patriots, the player is expected to sign a minimum contract with the Chiefs.

Michael Ginnitti, co-founder of the Spotrac portal, speculated that Kansas City should only pay the player US$1.21 million in wages during 2024.

Sudden trade the Chiefs made with the Arizona Cardinals

This past Monday, Kansas City made official a trade with the Arizona Cardinals for linebacker Cameron Thomas. In exchange, the Chiefs sent a seventh-round pick in a future NFL Draft.

The information was released by insider Ian Rapoport.

In 32 games over the last two seasons in Arizona (2022-23), Thomas amassed 40 tackles, including six for loss, and 3.0 sacks.

Thomas was selected by the Cardinals in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. The 6-foot-4-inch, 267-pounder played college football at San Diego State.

Over 32 games in his final two seasons in Arizona (2022 and 2023), Cam Thomas racked up 40 tackles, including six for a loss, and 3.0 sacks.

At San Diego State, he tried his hand at both defensive tackle and defensive end. This indicates that the 24-year-old is versatile and could be better developed in KC, a franchise famous for growing its players well.
