In their opening game of the season, the Kansas City Chiefs were hit by an injury to the player they were most looking forward to seeing in action.

Hollywood Brown suffered a sternoclavicular joint dislocation and will be out for a long time.

He was hospitalised the day he was injured and spent the night under observation.

Head coach Andy Reid informed the media that the veteran will not undergo surgery.

His injury has been compared to the same one that Tyreek Hill sustained in 2019 and took him out of action for four games.

What to expect now that Hollywood Brown is out indefinitely

Right now, there’s no reason to despair.

KC can still count on Xavier Worthy, Rashee Rice, Justin Watson, Skyy Moore, Kadarius Toney and Mecole Hardman.

At least until Brown returns to the field.

For now, other receivers will have the chance to show their mettle. Patrick Mahomes spoke to reporters this week about expectations for Hollywood’s replacements.

He mentioned Justin Watson as the person who is filling his shoes for the time being: “Very confident. A guy who knows everything. Can play all three positions. Can stretch the field and play underneath… When Hollywood gets back we’ll throw him right back in there.”

On Worthy, the quarterback commented that he still wants to see more of him. In the game against the Jaguars, the pass-catcher finished without a reception.

“We want to see what he can do… you want to take what’s there, but you want to give him chances to go out there and make plays,” said the signal-caller.

Other injured players who should be fine by the start of the season

Also in the match against Jacksonville, Louis Rees-Zammit also lost out.

The player left the pitch feeling discomfort in his back. He is listed as doubtful for the game against the Detroit Lions this Saturday (17).

Dave Toub, special teams coordinator, confirmed the newcomer’s injury by saying that his players needed to work on their kick returns because of mistakes made due to the NFL’s new rules.

“I want to see [Rees-Zammit], but he didn’t practice today. He might not be available. We’ll see, but I still want to see… there’s a lot of guys I want to see. We’ve got time to do that.”

Rees-Zammit was highly praised after playing multiple roles in Kansas City’s opening preseason game.

The Welshman acted as running back, kicker and kick-returner during the loss, as well as being part of the punt coverage team.

Apart from him, more Chiefs players are being hampered by injuries.

Charles Omenihu is still recovering from a knee injury sustained last season.

Chris Jones has been sidelined for a few weeks with a shoulder injury.

There are also a few others with bruises, ilness and missing some training in camp.

KC’s brutal offseason

Brutal is a good word to define KC’s offseason.

In a good way, the franchise did everything it could to surround itself with the best and strengthen all its units.

In the bad sense, injuries are something that hinder the development of the work for the season and can be fatal in terms of results.

There’s still time for things to settle down and gradually the team’s overall health will return to normal.
