Pat Mahomes and Travis Kelce explain behind-the-scenes of their extraordinary play against the Detroit Lions

Whether in pre-season games or not, Patrick Mahomes will never stop being a player that you’ll enjoy watching.

Until September arrives, the quarterback has only been in the first few quarters of games to get used to the routine of the game.

Last Saturday, during the game against the Detroit Lions, Mahomes and Travis Kelce played a game that will surely go down in the books.

The funny thing is that the artwork of the great stars of KC happened ‘unintentionally’.

The Chiefs duo’s move that went viral

In the 24-23 loss to the Detroit Lions, Mahomes and Kelce made the play that highlighted the game. And one that is still resonating.

With 6:16 left in the first quarter, on a third down for three yards, the quarterback faked a handoff and then threw an outrageous behind-the-back pass to tight end Travis Kelce, who made the reception and drove the crowd wild.

It was a pity the drive didn’t end in a touchdown. Kansas City settled for a field goal, but they created a moment that will never be forgotten.

But the truth is that the signal-caller improvised this move to punish the tight end. The difference is that these are two legends who do their job very well, so the result was spectacular.

Mahomes explanation

The reaction to the move the duo made was so instantaneous that both Mahomes clarified the behind the scenes of the painting they did on the field.

“Yeah. I mean, long story short, Travis didn’t run the route he was supposed to run and then it was kind of a behind-the-back pass kinda ‘cause I was mad. I was pissed off at Travis,” Mahomes said in an interview on the pitch, while the media crowd in the background laughed.

The QB’s pass was actually a way of ‘surprising’ the TE in order to penalise him for the mistake he made.

“He was supposed to run a flat route, I don’t know if you can hear me on the broadcast, I’m yelling at him and then he doesn’t run it, so out of spite, I threw a behind-the-back pass, but now it’s going to be a highlight.”

Shocking 0 people, Mahomes has once again shown himself to be totally extraordinary and off this planet.

“100% [it was improv]. That’s what I’ve been trying to say to everybody, it can’t be planned. It’s gotta be just naturally happening, kinda in the groove of things, and so I actually forgot about it until halftime, someone actually brought it up to me. It wasn’t like I planned it at all or it wasn’t a called play, it just kinda happened.”

“I was just like, ‘Gosh, darn it, Travis,’ and I threw it behind my back and it worked out for us.”

Kelce’s side of the story

After hearing from Pat Mahomes about his intentions in making the behind-the-back pass, Travis Kelce was asked what had actually happened at that moment.

The receiver, as we all know, started by mocking his friend and teammate.

“You know he’s got the voice thing, he said with a nasalised voice to imitate Mahomes, and continued: “and so he kind of mumbled out the play [and] I couldn’t hear it. I was walking up to the line, I was like trying to decipher what he was saying and before I knew it, he snapped the ball.”

“And then I saw him out of my peripheral, ‘Run to the sideline,’ and so I was trying to go help my guy out and by the time I looked over there, he was already in mid-form like a photo on a sports card and throwing the ball to me, so I guess it was the right place, right time.”

It’s worth noting that they did convert the third down.

Andy Reid’s comments from the sidelines

The team’s head coach and ‘father’, Andy Reid, watched it all from the sidelines and obviously none of it was planned.

He said he was fine with the play, as long as one thing was under control.

“I heard he blamed (Travis) Kelce, but that’s alright. He does it in practice every day, and I’m alright as long as it’s a completion.”

If we’re lucky, we’ll see more of these masterpieces during the 2024 season, but this time on purpose.
