The Kansas City Chiefs are proof that having an efficient kicker can be crucial to winning games, especially in Super Bowls.
Harrison Butker has been announced as the highest paid kicker in the NFL.
The franchise decided to extend his stay in Kansas City. He signed a four-year contract worth up to $25.6 million, with $17.75 million guaranteed.
Butker was already going to make $4.1 million this year because of his last deal.
The curious part is that the player was responsible for negotiating his own contract.
What happened leading up to his arrival and triumph at the Chiefs
Butker was selected by the Carolina Panthers in the 2017 Draft, but didn’t get a spot on the team and signed to remain on the practice squad.
Coincidentally, KC’s kicker at the time, Cairo Santos, had a groin injury and would have to sit out.
So the Chiefs brought in the 29-year-old and never let him leave. He put in post-season performances and contributed to shaping the most successful era in the team’s history.
In the 2022 playoffs, he made decisive kicks to beat the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship game and the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII.
Butker set a Super Bowl record with a 57-yard field goal against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII in February.
In all, he scored nine field goals in one of the world’s biggest sporting events – that’s also a record.
