Kansas City Chiefs’ biggest stumbling block in the offseason is settling the issue and tying down the biggest defensive star to an elusive contract.
Chris Jones has been the heartbeat of Steve Spagnuolo’s excellent defense.
A problem has quickly resurfaced in the aftermath of the Super Bowl LVIII victory.
Urgency for Jones’ contract
Chris Jones’ contract needs to be discussed and fast.
With the Chiefs opting to use the ‘non-exclusive franchise tag’ on L’Jarius Sneed, Jones is now vulnerable to land in the free agency market.
Brett Veach and the executives have ‘growing optimism’ that both parties will agree to a favorable extension for both sides.

However, the three-time Super Bowl winner and his agent may wait to see what the open market has to offer.
The cap space is a crucial element of NFL regulations, so the Chiefs may not be able to offer Jones the money that he has certainly earned.
Hence, other franchises can start a conversation with the defensive lineman and propose a contract with a lot more money attached.
The two-time First-Team All-Pro will be the golden ticket if he sneaks into free agency – many franchises will want him as an addition.
Nevertheless, Jones seems intended to remain in the state of Missouri and his recent post on X may be telling.
Jones takes to X
Jones posted a picture of him and head coach Andy Reid celebrating after the victory at the Super Bowl in Las Vegas, with the caption ‘KC….’
Could this be a hint that Jones wants the Chiefs to speed up the process regarding his new contract?
Reports suggest that the preference of the 29-year-old is staying with the man they call ‘Big Red’.
On the Rich Eisen show, Reid was asked about the star player’s post, he responded: “That could be taken a couple of different ways, but I like the dot dots.”
When asked if there was more to come, he replied: “Well I’m hoping. I can’t give you anything because I don’t have anything, I’ve been doing all these media things. Maybe something’s going better than I think it is.”
The post also showed Jones was currently on call with someone for over one hour, could that have been Reid himself?
Fans are speculating and hope to find out soon!
There was no insight to report from Reid, but we do know that he will be doing everything in his power for Jones to remain with the ‘three-peat’ dream.
Response to Raiders links
Speaking to Pro Football Talk, Mike Florio added some context to what he has heard about Jones’ social media post.
Florio said: “I’m told, per source, there was something out there on the internet that was linking him to the Raiders, and so he put that out there.”
It wouldn’t be a surprise if the Raiders tried to tempt him away and damage the Chiefs, but Jones quite clearly wants to stay put.
