‘I’m glad’… Nick Wright speaks out on Kansas City Chiefs’ L’Jarius Sneed decision

Kansas City has freed up almost 20 million dollars after parting ways with Sneed.

L’Jarius Sneed is no longer a Chief and will start his next chapter with the Tennessee Titans.

Since the Kansas City Chiefs have traded him to their AFC conference rival, the salary cap has gone up and the team can take care of other contracts, either extensions or new players.

If there hadn’t been a trade, Sneed would have played this season on the tag. In any case, KC couldn’t afford him – NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport announced on Tuesday the contract terms of the cornerback’s deal with the Titans.

He is now one of the seven highest-paid cornerbacks in the league.

In exchange, Kansas City got a 2025 third-round pick and a 2024 seventh-round pick swap. And, naturally, the advantage of having increased their cap space to $27.4 million.

The 27-year-old lands in his new home in his prime. In four seasons with the Chiefs, he made 10 interceptions and over 300 tackles.

It seems that Trent McDuffie will be Sneed’s replacement. He has a base salary of more than $1.5 million for 2024, according to Spotrac. In addition, he has two years remaining and a fifth-year option still available.

Still, McDuffie needs someone to share the field with.

Reactions and thoughts on Sneed’s departure

On last Tuesday’s edition of the First Things First show, Nick Wright spoke about the cornerback’s exit: “It’s a significant loss because he’s a great player.”

He didn’t forget to recall Sneed’s memorable performance in the AFC Championship game, when he knocked the ball out of Zay Flowers’ hand at the goal line – in fact, he disturbed his opponent throughout the game.

“On this last Super Bowl run I think (he) made the single biggest play of any players in any playoff game.”

Wright also made remarks about the value of Sneed’s contract and the Chiefs’ “tradition” in the Draft.

“I’m glad Sneed got the deal from the Titans. But I’m also glad Kansas City didn’t give him the deal Tennessee did.”

“I’m not gonna act like this is a net positive for Kansas City for this season, but I think it was the prudent move and the move a lot of teams have trouble making.”

“The Chiefs clearly believe that they can draft and develop this position and Sneed is an example of it.”

With a month left until the Draft, it might be time for the Chiefs to start considering a cornerback to fill out the depth chart.

It’s expected that KC will prioritize wide receivers in the first pick, but general manager Brett Veach is aware that the team can’t help but look at the CB position, as well as defensive and offensive lineman and safety.
