Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy has a singular Super Bowl win under his belt with his previous franchise.
The Green Bay Packers lifted the prestigious Vince Lombardi Trophy in Super Bowl 45 under the leadership of the now Dallas Cowboys head coach, way back in 2011. Defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers in the final was an emotional moment for his career as he denied his childhood team Super Bowl glory.
Packers success to disappointment
This was the last time Mike McCarthy would return to the Super Bowl with the Wisconsin based team. Four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers was McCarthy’s quarterback during his 13 years with the ‘Cheeseheads’, so with such great talent at his disposal, his tenure in Green Bay was disappointing after just one Super Bowl appearance.
After serving as one of the longest reigning coaches with a franchise in NFL history, the 60-year-old was sacked as his progress with the team stagnated. Opting for a break from football, the Pittsburgh native was appointed HC of the Dallas Cowboys for the 2020 season.
Moreover, his predecessor Jason Garrett’s playoff disappointment was one of the key reasons for his firing. McCarthy has not helped his cause as he has only added further agony to this problem.
In 2020, the Cowboys failed to reach the playoffs, out of no fault of the new Dallas head coach, as star quarterback Dak Prescott sustained a key injury ending his season. Nonetheless, back-to-back playoff eliminations at the hands of the San Francisco 49ers in consecutive seasons added pressure to his job.
Most recently, their disastrous elimination at home to McCarthy’s former employer, the Green Bay Packers, has led to sections of fans asking for the sack.

Do or die for McCarthy
Owner and franchise president, Jerry Jones, has kept faith in the Cowboys head coach for the upcoming 2024 season. Although, McCarthy knows he will have to demonstrate significant improvement, most likely in the form of a Super Bowl appearance as the minimum.
McCarthy has the chance to become the first HC to win rings with two franchises. But the shine is off, and the pressure is on. Even reaching the NFC Championship game next season might not be enough to keep his job.
