Former Cowboys receiver sees a Super Bowl in the future for Prescott and McCarthy

Wednesday’s news of Mike McCarthy staying in “Big D” was unexpected, but at least one former receiver believes it’s for the best.

After the Cowboys’ disastrous loss to the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card Round, popular opinion was that Mike McCarthy had to go.

Jerry Jones, however, didn’t see things the same way, deciding instead to honour the final year of McCarthy’s contract.

The day after that news broke, Dan Orlovsky appeared on the Pat McAfee Show to give his take on the situation.

The NFL analyst at ESPN says that retaining McCarthy is “a mistake”, adding that he was completely outcoached by Matt LaFleur last Sunday.

Orlovsky’s initial take on McCarthy being retained was similar, with the analyst saying on X that the team isn’t serious about winning the Super Bowl.

Most people who follow the NFL and the Cowboys echo similar feelings that Dallas needs a change in leadership.

Hope Springs Eternal

In the Cambridge dictionary, the phrase “hope spring eternal” means continuing to hope something will happen, although it seems unlikely.

Many Cowboy fans probably feel that way after another early playoff exit.

However former three-time Pro Bowl receiver Keyshawn Johnson, who played two seasons with the Cowboys, still has faith in McCarthy.

On Thursday’s episode of “Undisputed”, Johnson said he sees McCarthy and Dak Prescott winning a Super Bowl together.

“They’re going in the direction”, said Johnson about the Cowboys.

“They just got to figure out how to get past whatever that little disease is that they can’t get past in the playoffs.”

Johnson had this say about whether or not Dak and McCarthy are capable of winning a Super Bowl together.

“Absolutely they are.”

The host of “Undisputed” and long-time Cowboys supporter Skip Bayless doesn’t share the same optimism about McCarthy.

On his X account Wednesday, Bayless posted, “I’m now counting the days till my next big Cowboy playoff letdown.”

McCarthy has a 1-3 playoff record with the Cowboys, with Dak going 2-5 in the postseason.

What Needs to Happen?

While Johnson still believes McCarthy and Dak can win the Super Bowl, he says the Cowboys need to make changes.

They got to get another receiver, they got to get a bigger back.”

Johnson added that doesn’t necessarily mean shipping out Tony Pollard.

He did say they could use an added threat in the backfield, such as Derrick Henry.

He also said that if Trevon Diggs is healthy; having him and DaRon Bland in the cover game would be beneficial.

Defensively, Johnson believes they need a middle linebacker desperately while also shoring up the offensive line.

Keyshawn concluded by saying, “I do believe that Dak Prescott will eventually be a Super Bowl quarterback.”

Statistically speaking, in 2023, Dak had a career-best 410 completions, equalling his mark from 2021.

He also had his best single season regarding completion percentage (69.5%) and threw for over 4,500 yards (4,516) for the third time in his career.

Under McCarthy the Cowboys have gone 12-5 in each of the past three regular seasons.
