Daniel Jeremiah mocks Chiefs to select another wide receiver instead of Xavier Worthy

There’s just over a month to go until the NFL Draft and for Patrick Mahomes to find out who else will be a possible target on the field next season.

Predictions for the NFL Draft start to be made months in advance and they change a lot according to the movements within the league.

Kansas City Chiefs’ first selection is the last of the first round, i.e. pick 32. For the past year, many analysts have been preaching for General Manager Brett Veach to choose wide receiver Xavier Worthy, from Texas Tech University.

The prospect first came to prominence and was tipped as a good name for the NFL in 2021, when he was still a freshman. In that season, he caught 62 passes for 981 yards (15.8 yards per catch) and 12 touchdowns. Over the following two years, the WR set a new record in the history of the Longhorns, with 21 touchdown receptions.

In fact, what has been most impressive about Worthy’s traits so far is his speed. He took centre stage at the NFL Combine and made history when he broke the record for the 40-yard dash: he crossed the finish line in 4.21 seconds.

Worthy, in an interview with USA TODAY Sports, said that he would be the best fit for Kansas City, because he could be used on the field in the same way that Tyreek Hill was.

“In a perfect world, I definitely would want to go to the Chiefs.”

“Just the way Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs improvise and use you. They had Tyreek Hill. The way they used him, I feel like that would be a perfect fit for me.”

However, free-agency arrived and the Chiefs quickly began to move and strengthen the roster.

The Hollywood Brown addition and possible changes for the Draft

Daniel Jeremiah, NFL Media analyst, believes that KC’s direction in the Draft has changed since they signed a deal with Hollywood Brown.

According to his new mock, the Chiefs are expected to choose Adonai Mitchell over Worthy.

Mitchell played for two years at Georgia before being transferred to Texas in 2023. During his time out there, he received 38 passes for 560 yards and scored seven touchdowns.

The WR’s development while playing for the Longhorns is clear: in just one season, he caught 55 receptions, 845 yards and 11 touchdowns.

He’s an athletic, agile player who switches routes with ease and can be a threat in the redzone. In addition, his presence could help reduce some of the pressure on Travis Kelce.

On the other hand, he can be ineffective at receiving the ball when contested and when it comes to blocking opponents.

A lot can happen between now and the Draft, scheduled for the 25th of April. Kansas City has already made important extensions and at the same time is losing players who have made a difference in the Super Bowl titles they’ve won in the past few years.
