The Cowboys’ offseason has only just gotten underway with the established signing of Eric Kendricks from the free agency pool.
What made the signing much more of a statement was that he was prized away after agreeing to a deal with the San Francisco 49ers.
Free agency is a go
If the Dallas Cowboys are looking to be competing for the Super Bowl, they will be bidding for that accolade with the 49ers.
So, stealing a free agent of Kendricks’ caliber from under a rival’s nose is one way to start things off.
However, whilst the Cowboys are building for the 2024 season, it has prompted Dan Orlovsky to make a bold statement on the Dan Patrick Show.
Patrick asked the NFL reporter if he could see Jerry Jones letting Prescott play without an extension.
‘Should have moved on from Dak’
Orlovsky was quick to point out what the Cowboys should have done: “The day after they lost to Green Bay I said they should have blown the whole place up.
“Restart, three years in a row 12 wins, I would’ve got rid of Mike McCarthy, moved on from Dak.
“Tried to get as much value as I can for a good starting QB. Now they’re pigeonholed.”

Orlovsky proposed that America’s Team should have started again from scratch, with a new canvas.
Prescott would have excellent trade value as he has just produced a season worthy of MVP runner-up.
Statistically, the eighth-year quarterback has produced a career-high season in terms of numbers.
There would be multiple franchises that would sanction a trade instantly if Prescott was made available.
The dreaded cap hit
Now, the Cowboys had a dilemma with the 30-year-old swallowing up $59.4 million in cap space next season.
Furthermore, Orlovsky refers to this problem in his reasoning: “You’re either gonna play this season handcuffed because of the salary that he has and have holes you are not able to fill.
“Or you are going to have to extend him and kick the can down the line, when the results, when they have mattered most have been underwhelming.”
A radical rebuild which he suggested was not completely out of the question.
Sections of fans were asking for Jones to move on from Prescott.
However, the time for that has come and gone.
If they were to trade Prescott, they would have executed that action weeks ago to understand the amount of cap space for free agency.
What now for the Cowboys
Now, only two options remain:
- Let Prescott play out his year and Jones could then offer a massive contract if he wins a Super Bowl or the QB hits free agency.
- Jones will extend Prescott this offseason and restructure the deal.
Nevertheless, the latter seems increasingly unlikely as the Cowboys could have done this before the initial surge of free agency.
Who knows what Jones has planned in his head?
