Cowboys are eyeing up Dak Prescott contract extension in offseason

Cowboys executive vice president and CEO Stephen Jones has shared details about the team’s plans to offer Dak Prescott a contract extension at the end of the season.

The Cowboys entered the Week 7 bye with their tails up after a gritty win over the Los Angeles Chargers. The complexion of Dallas’ season hinged entirely upon that game; a loss would have sunk the Cowboys to 3-2 for the season and would have created all sorts of questions about where this team is going.

However, the 20-17 win moved them to 4-2 and keeps the team in the hunt in the NFC.

Cowboys eye up Dak Prescott contract extension in offseason

Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has had a solid if not spectacular season so far. He has completed 69.5 percent of his passes (a career high) for 1,333 yards, six touchdowns and four interceptions through six games.

The 30-year-old often comes in for unfair criticism, but it’s clear he retains confidence within the Cowboys camp.

In fact, Dak will be Dallas’ quarterback for the foreseeable future as all signs points towards him getting a contract extension after his current contract is up in 2024.

Prescott will finish the 2023 season with one year left on the four-year extension he signed back in 2021.

Cowboys executive vice president and CEO Stephen Jones told Dianna Russini of The Athletic that the team is looking to come to terms on an extension with Dak after this year.

“He’s under contract now, but we’d like to do this after the season.” Jones told Russini. “Once the season is over, we will focus on that. Dak will be our quarterback.”

Should an extension be agreed, he will receive $59.455 million against the cap next season.

Jerry Jones and Dallas committed to Dak for forseeable

During his eight years in Dallas, Dak has led the team to a 65-38 record, but with a 2-4 playoff record. The Cowboys are obviously hopeful that can improve this season, which is probably why they’re holding fire on officially announcing Dak’s extension.

However, Jerry Jones has always been committed to Dak, saying before the season, “we expect Dak to be with us a long time”. It’s clear the franchise has no immediate plans to shake up the QB position.

While undoubtedly on the team’s radar, Dak’s contract situation isn’t exactly a number one priority right now.

The Cowboys have a difficult run of games on the horizon, as they return to action with a home game against the Los Angeles Rams on October 29. They then face the Eagles twice and have games against the Seahawks, Bills, Dolphins, and Lions.

Dak’s performances during this run will likely have a significant impact on the narrative around his contract extension come the end of the season.
