Chiefs reportedly exploring trade possibilities for one of their wide receivers

According to reports, the Chiefs are exploring trade possibilities for wide receiver Richie James ahead of the trade deadline on October 31.

The Kansas City Chiefs clearly have issues with their wide receivers. Andy Reid simply isn’t getting enough production from his wideouts and it’s clear they need a boost to their pass-catching options.

Fortunately, the team has a chance to improve their roster ahead of Tuesday’s trade deadline. As ever, the Chiefs are expected to be busy at the deadline, although all the noise at the moment is around trading away a WR rather than trading for one.

Chiefs reportedly exploring trade for WR Richie James

According to ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler, the Kansas City Chiefs are exploring a trade of wide receiver Richie James.

Fowler tweeted Monday: ‘The Chiefs and WR Richie James are exploring trade possibilities, per source. James – who’s on IR but would be healthy for a new team – appears the odd man out after Mecole Hardman’s trade. James had 50 catches for 569 yards and four touchdowns for the Giants in 2022.’

The 28-year-old is a former seventh-round pick of the 49ers and joined Kansas City as a free agent this past offseason.

In 2023, James has appeared in two games for the Chiefs and caught one pass on three targets for six yards. He suffered an MCL injury that landed him on injured reserve before the Chiefs decided to bring back Mecole Hardman.

Hardman’s return, combined with the emergence of rookie Rashee Rice, means James has fallen down the pecking order and his days in Kansas look numbered.

Reid still remains confident in his offense

It remains to be seen who the Chiefs ultimately trade for. It remains to be seen if they trade for anyone.

Amid criticisms of the team’s wideouts, Andy Reid maintains the Chiefs still have enough talent on offense.

“I do,” Reid said. “[The loss] was a combination of things. It was one of those where we were kind of chasing — whether it was starting with me with a play call, whether it was the play that was called was OK — but you had a breakdown in protection. [Or] whether the protection was good and the play was good, the receiver dropped the ball — or we didn’t make the right read from our quarterback side. Or we were running a wrong route.”
