The Kansas City Chiefs have secured players of the highest calibre to be present in the squad that will compete for the three-peat.

Kansas City announced moments before their final pre-season game against the Chicago Bears last Thursday (22) that they had extended the contract of centre Creed Humphrey.

Humphrey signed a new four-year deal worth $72 million and includes $50 million guaranteed, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The new deal makes him the highest paid center in the NFL to date and the sixth highest among interior offensive linemen.

Philadelphia Eagles guard Landon Dickerson leads this category with an annual salary of US$21 million. The Chiefs player will receive US$18 million as an annual salary.

Detroit Lions center Frank Ragnow ($13.5 million) is in second place among the league’s centers.

Humphrey, 25, has been one of KC’s standouts since being selected in the second round of the 2022 draft. The centre has started every game over the last three seasons. He was also elected to the Pro Bowl twice and All-Pro in 2022.

Humphrey is optimistic after his extension with the Chiefs

Patrick Mahomes will be able to count on one of the best people to handle the snap for him.

Humphrey is likely to spend his entire career as a member of the Chiefs.

After signing his contract, the player spoke to the media this past Monday on how he feels about having his stay in Kansas City extended.

“I’m in the perfect situation for me. I’m playing in a placa that I get to cal home, and it’s been awesome to cal home the past four years. I’ve reallt enjoyed it. So getting this opportunity is awesome.”

He also commented on what really makes his journey with the Chiefs worthwhile.

“The guys around, [the] coaching staff [and] everything is top notch here,” noted. “Obviously, [with] getting to play with Pat, things like that, this whole situation is perfect for me. I’m really happy to be here.”

This year would be the center’s last on a rookie contract. But now he has secured his second contract. A huge one, by the way: “It worked out on both sides. It was a good process, and it worked out great. So I’m excited about it. For me, I’m glad that that’s out of the way now. I can focus all on football.”

About to take the field against the Bears in the last game of the pre-season, he was congratulated on his renewal with the reigning champions.

“Everybody was telling me congratulations and everything, and I’m excited about it,” said.

Humphrey is motivated for 2024. “For me, I had that day to be excited. But now it’s back to work.”

Humphrey wasn’t worried about not staying in KC

His status as the highest-paid center in the league has the potential to shake up the market in terms of how much players in his position will be paid in the future.

“I think that’s something that everybody wants to do for the sake of everybody in the NFL,” said.

“It’s good for everybody in the NFL. So, yeah, I’m excited about it again. They did a great job. I just had a great job negotiating; it was a good process. And I’m excited about the way it turned out and ready to play four more years here.”

Before his contract was extended, there was a lot of movement in KC. Travis Kelce renewed with KC, Harrison Butker, Chris Jones…

The offensive lineman was asked if he was apprehensive about his contract. “I never really thought about it. For me, I’ve just tried to stay focused on ball – and that’s the way I’ve approached this whole thing: to stay focused on ball and prove what I can every day. It was never really something that I was too busy straining and thinking over too much.”

Thinking a little prematurely, the Chiefs will have to decide whether other players from the 2021 Draft class will remain with the team, such as Trey Smith and linebacker Nick Bolton. That said, Creed was asked what he imagines will happen to his teammates.

We obviously would love to be able to have everyone stay. [But] it’s not really too much on my mind to figure that out. For me, it’s just now focusing on football and focusing on this year – focusing on the days ahead [and] getting ready for another run of this thing.”

Bill Belichick spoke about Humphrey becoming the highest paid center in the NFL

In an appearance on the Pat McAfee show, the former New England Patriots Bill Belichick coach gave his opinion on KC’s decision to extend Humphrey’s stay with the franchise.

“That was another good move, I thought, by Kansas City, re-signing the center, Creed Humphrey,” claimed.

“That kid’s a good, young player, he’s got a lot of football left in him. A long-term deal that solidifies the middle, and that center’s an important position, especially with a quarterback like Patrick [Mahomes], in terms of not only the cadences, but the ‘Mike’ [middle linebacker] points, getting the protections set right, seeing subtle things that a center can see on the line of scrimmage about where a blitz might be coming from, or a lineman cheating a certain way, who can help a quarterback out.”

Belichick gave a possible pinprick about teams not giving enough value to their centers, who play a crucial role in the attack.

“That’s really a big position, and I think a lot of those guys, honestly, are undervalued because of how good they help the other four guys play on the line. A bad center kills the other four linemen. A good center can help those guys play better by making the right calls and doing the right thing.”
