The progression on the offensive side of the ball was a critical factor which saw the Chiefs land in the Super Bowl final and emerge victorious.

It is well known that the Kansas City Chiefs were a shadow of their previous scoring ability in the early stages of the 2023 season.

The Chiefs had multiple mistakes on offense and there seemed to be a lack of chemistry all over the field.

The drops need to stop

One of the most notable problems was the persistent dropped catches whether that be nine-time Pro-Bowler Travis Kelce, Jerick McKinnon or Kadarius Toney.

This was made more evident as they came off the 2022 season being one of the most elite offences in the league. Concluding with the franchise edging a narrow, high-scoring Super Bowl LVII against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Kadarius Toney endured a rough opening day against the Detroit Lions in 2023, as he dropped multiple passes. One pass which slipped through his hands fell into the hands of Brian Branch who returned it for a touchdown.

However, the offence grouped together and all took accountability for the mistakes.

Matt Nagy the offensive coordinator was the glue which steered the ship in the right direction.

Whilst at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, Andy Reid sat down with the crew at CBS Sports and reflected on the offensive woes: “We eliminated some of the drops, we had a bunch of drops and penalties early [on].

Nagy’s influence on the turnaround was recognized by Reid in his interview: “I thought Matt Nagy done a phenomenal job.

“He puts everything together and we talk during the games on the different plays. He and his staff, Joe Bleymaier, Andy Heck on the offensive line, the list goes on, those guys done a phenomenal job I thought.

“Sticking together and making sure the players stuck together.”

Rashee’s rookie growth

‘Big Red’ was full of compliments for his offensive coaching staff.

Reid understands they are still learning the game as he does his best to cultivate his young coaches.

Rashee Rice’s growth throughout his rookie year was outstanding and was crucial to changing the offense in Reid’s view: “Rashee was a big part of that and his growth made him play well opposite Kelce [Travis].

“He [Rice] could kind of do the same things Kelce could do, playing in space and that became an important factor, for not only Rashee but for Patrick [Mahomes] and Kelce.”

Nagy’s nurturing of talent like Rice has unlocked his potential and there is even talk of the rookie out of SMU becoming the Chiefs number one receiver.
