Jerry Jones has been backed into a contractual nightmare which is down to his own making in 2021.

America’s Team used consecutive franchise tags on Dak Prescott in 2020 and 2021 before the Cowboys awarded him a long-term deal.

The signal-caller signed a four-year contract worth up to $160 million including $126 million guaranteed. This was the highest guaranteed figure in the NFL at the time and was eclipsed by Baltimore Ravens’ Lamar Jackson in 2023.

More importantly, embedded within the terms and conditions of the 2021 contract were two leverage tools that have handicapped Jerry Jones.

Dallas cannot place the franchise tag on the three-time Pro Bowler or trade him away to another franchise.

Therefore, Prescott can waltz into the open market as an unrestricted free agent which will have various teams circling if he reaches that territory.

Furthermore, the 2023 MVP runner-up is about to swallow up $55.4 million worth of 2024 cap space.

This is the second-highest individual cap hit in the NFL, only topped by the Cleveland Browns Deshaun Watson.

This is more ammunition for the Dallas Cowboys to offer a new long-term deal that can be restructured to alleviate the monstrous cap hit.

Dak Prescott is adamant that he does not play for money during offseason training

Dak Prescott has claimed that he is not interested in finances but he and his agent will seek a competitive contract.

Nonetheless, his leverage has put him into pole position to send seismic waves through the QB market with a potential $60 million APY.

His ‘not playing for money’ comments have seen people, like NFL expert Kyle Brandt, encourage Prescott to take less money.

The probable record-breaking figure is deterring Jerry Jones from offering a new contract because he would have done so by now.

NFL Insider shuts down the idea of Dak Prescott taking a discount from the Cowboys

NFL Insider Adam Schefter has discouraged any motion of Prescott taking a discount from the Dallas Cowboys this offseason.

“Let’s be very clear about hometown discounts as they pertain to Dak Prescott. There is not a player in football with more leverage right now than Dak Prescott,” Schefter explained via NFL on ESPN.

“He would be out of his mind to give any type of discount when he is in the position to reset the quarterback market after the season if Dallas doesn’t have a deal done with him.

“There’s no player in football with more leverage than Dak Prescott and I would expect him to use it like a hammer, despite him liking to stay with the hometown team the Cowboys.”

Schefter believes there is no reason for Prescott to not eke out every cent he can while being in such a favorable position.

Jerry Jones is left with a problematic situation and will need to reach a conclusion

Jerry Jones has a dilemma to deal with and must face the music otherwise Prescott could be inclined to start a new challenge elsewhere.

Prescott has been present at the team’s OTAs and it is more beneficial for him to wait and let the QB market become more expensive.

QB’s Jordan Love, Tua Tagovailoa, and Trevor Lawrence are all eyeing potential new extensions with their respective franchises.

Ultimately, it is a waiting game for Presoctt and he has no motivation to jump the gun.
