Just two days before the NFL Draft, Kansas City already has their plan of action for the 2024 season well underway.
After a successful initial phase in free agency, where strategies were clearly targeted, the Kansas City Chiefs are now focussing its efforts on prospects who can further strengthen the squad and support their hunt for a third consecutive title.
Trying to look to the future and retain their main stars through significant contract extensions, the Chiefs are determined to build a solid foundation for their ongoing success.
Here’s what the Chiefs need to focus on in the 2024 Draft.
For Mahomes’ sake, KC needs an offensive tackle
The priority has always been to protect the blind side of Patrick Mahomes – Brett Veach will avoid taking that risk as much as possible. Especially considering that Donovan Smith is in the final year of his contract and there’s no certainty that he’ll stay with the franchise for the next few seasons.
Honestly, the left tackle position doesn’t have an absolute starter. Knowing the coaching staff, it’s hard for sophomore Wanya Morris to take over the role when he’s not as developed as he needs to be. Unless there’s someone new to compete with him…
Despite their focus on other positions, I don’t see the organisation wasting a good prospect for this unit in the first two rounds.

The Chiefs need to build a playmaker wide receiver
Considering that Travis Kelce is already in his prime and will be 35 at the end of the year, the organisation needs to look to the future of its receivers. Kadarius Toney and Skyy Moore are good options, but the team needs a playmaker for the next few years who can handle the responsibility.
The acquisition of Hollywood Brown gives the unit a boost, but it’s a one-year deal and Kansas City must evaluate the results the player promises to bring.
For now, it’s not necessary to draft a starter, but someone with great potential to become a reliable weapon in Mahomes’ hands. Until then, this young talent would benefit from the teachings of the veteran receivers and would develop through his own strengths and absorb what he lacks from the leaders.
Losing L’Jarius Sneed has opened up holes in the corner that need to be filled
KC needs to choose a good prospect to cover the middle and end of the field. The history of cornerbacks drafted by the team is good, and they are generally tall, long and fast.
For this year, the tradition needs to continue. The loss of L’Jarius Sneed needs to be compensated by someone who can step up and cover the areas of the field he used to be a master of.
What the Chiefs should be looking for is a CB who is physical, aggressive, quick and knows how to target the opponent against the running game.
I’ll leave honourable mentions for other positions that the organisation needs to think about, at least for the final rounds: running back, tight end and defensive lineman.
