There’s no doubt who the go-to receiver is for the Dallas Cowboys at the moment; the #2 guy though is very much up for grabs.
Outside of CeeDee Lamb, Mike McCarthy’s offense didn’t have another deep threat last season, but there are options who could fill that role when free agency opens on March 13.
Who were the Cowboys’ secondary pass catchers in 2023?
The Cowboys got some solid production out of their pass catchers last season, but nobody who’s exactly a game-breaker besides Lamb.
Jake Ferguson‘s 761 receiving yards in the regular season were second on the team, well behind Lamb (1,749), with Brandin Cooks next at 657.
Cooks had eight touchdown catches, the second-most on the team after Lamb, while Michael Gallup had just two scores and 418 yards through the air.
The team restructured Cooks’ contract, turning $8 million of his $12 million base salary with the Houston Texans into bonuses in 2023.
He provided some decent support for Lamb last season but didn’t show much big-play capability.
Why the Cowboys should consider Gabe Davis
With names like Mike Evans, Marquise Brown and Julio Jones available in free agency, one might forget that Gabe Davis is also on the market.
He’d be a great fit on a team that is pass-heavy like Dallas and loves to go down the field and be aggressive.
The Buffalo Bills receiver is a big-play threat and understands the pressures of playing in big games.
He’s also only 24 years old, so you have to think his best years are ahead of him.
Davis has a career average of 16.7 yards per catch, hasn’t fumbled more than once a season, and has had over 40 catches in each of his past two seasons.

Gabe Davis’ price
Davis made a base salary of over $2 million last season, per Spotrac.
His bonuses were close to $175,000.
Heading into free agency Davis’ market value is estimated at $13.6 million annually.
It’s unknown if that’s too rich for Jerry Jones’ blood, but given his attributes, the Cowboys might be willing to gamble; it is Texas, after all.
Gabe Davis’ Flaw
Davis makes his share of big plays, but he has one habit that could be a concern.
In every year of his career Davis’ catch percentage has been below the 60% mark.
Last season, Davis had the ball thrown his way 81 times, making 45 catches.
He wouldn’t be the first to struggle and improve in that area.
Rashee Rice led the Chiefs in drops in 2023, but down the stretch of the campaign and in the playoffs was one of KC’s go-to receivers.
Since joining the Bills he’s been second fiddle to Stefon Diggs.
What makes Gabe Davis stand out
Other than his big play ability, there’s one thing Gabe’s proven to be great at throughout his career.
He tends to come up big in the playoffs, and that’s something the Cowboys are looking for.
Davis had a 113-yard receiving game in the 2022 playoffs against Miami and posted 201 yards versus Kansas City in the 2021 Divisional Round.
Signing him is a gamble, but if you’re looking for playoff performers, Davis is that.
