Dak Prescott’s looming contract situation remains a huge stumbling block for the Dallas Cowboys in their crucial offseason matters.
Owner, President, and general manager, Jerry Jones, has confirmed that their franchise quarterback will be receiving a new deal and that they will be getting to work shortly on the matter.
Prescott is coming off his best numbers season in the NFL and his production is too great to just simply let him walk away.
America’s Team is in no position to let the regular season MVP runner-up just walk, as his cap hit of $59.4 million does not make it financially viable.
Therefore, Prescott now holds all the leverage and is sitting patiently for Jerry Jones to show his hand – which he will be forced to.
Prescott has all the leverage
NFL media reports have suggested that Prescott could be receiving a massive $60 million per year deal.
A contract of this magnitude will make him the highest-paid quarterback in the league – surpassing the Cincinnati Bengals, Joe Burrow, who makes $55 million per year.
The Dallas quarterback attended a Children’s Cancer Fund event and seemed very positive about his contract situation, reported via Todd Archer on X: “I’m definitely confident.
“Obviously it helps the team. It’s important for the numbers… That is a process. Both sides understand that. Everything’s great. It’ll happen.”
From Prescott’s perspective, the ship is plain sailing and he seems to indicate the events which will unfold in the coming days.
‘Alternative is a lot worse’
The hot topic was debated on NFL On ESPN. Mike Tannenbaum, the ex-general manager of the New York Jets, expressed the point that the Cowboys need Dak Prescott for future success:
He said: “Fundamentally Dak Prescott is in the prime of his career, he’s going to be 31.
“He has a lot of great years, if you are the Cowboys guys what I am saying to each one of you is, if not Dak, then who?
“Get the deal done, the alternative is a lot worse. Two-thirds of the NFL would give their left leg to have Dak Prescott as their quarterback.”
That is the harsh reality the Cowboys have to accept, if they did choose to move on from Dak Prescott, then the rebuilding process starts once again.
America’s Team and Jerry Jones are seeking imminent success, but casting Prescott aside is not an option.
Jones stated America’s Team will be going ‘all in’ during the offseason.
One can assume that means Prescott will be paid handsomely.
Tannenbaum suggests the quarterback choices to replace Prescott are not appealing: “Who are you going to go with, Trey Lance or are you going to trade for Zach Wilson and try and resurrect him?
“You’re not going to be in the top five [draft picks] next year. Some of the things you see on social media about Dak Prescott doesn’t happen in other places.”
Cowboys better off with Dak
Zach Wilson to the Cowboys would not instil a heightened level of optimism for the 2024 season.
The 2021 NFL first-round draft pick has endured a turbulent experience thus far and has not proved that he can be an established starter.
Unless there is a significant resurrection of Wilson’s career, the Cowboys should steer clear of the 24-year-old.
