After the Kansas City Chiefs suffered a second consecutive defeat on Sunday, NFL officials were again at the centre of controversy.
It’s the second time referees have been placed under the microscope during a Chief game in as many weeks.
Offensively, the Chiefs had the ball in their hands and were marching for a potential game-winning drive at home to the Buffalo Bills.
In the end, though, their comeback wound up short, dropping their record to 8-5 on the season.
Penalizing the Chiefs
Throughout the season, penalties have held the Chiefs back in many respects.
In 13 regular season encounters, Kansas City has incurred over 80 penalties.
One of the worst culprits for this team in 2023 has been Jawaan Taylor, who had 12 penalties before their Week 13 encounter versus Buffalo, six for holding and another six for false starts.
The Chiefs fell victim to some questionable officiating at Lambeau Field against the Green Bay Packers.
Down by eight on the game’s final drive, a pass interference was clearly missed, and the the Hail Mary at the end of the game was dangerously close as well.
Trailing by a field goal in the dying stages at home to Buffalo, Kansas City had a chance to get back into the win column.

It seemed like they’d taken the lead when Patrick Mahomes found Travis Kelce, whose brilliant lateral to Kadarius Toney wound out in a touchdown.
However, it was all for nothing as Toney was deemed to have lined up offside, nullifying the play.
While most people on social media are pointing the finger at Toney, the Chiefs don’t seem to agree with the officiating.
Without Warning
After the Chiefs’ final possession ended, we saw a visibly upset Patrick Mahomes venting his frustrations on the sidelines.
That continued in a very awkward exchange of words with the Bills Josh Allen, where the reigning MVP used some salty language.
In the post-game press conference, Mahomes explained what upset him about the offside call on Toney.
“I’ve played seven years [and] never had offensive offside called.”
“That’s elementary school [stuff] we’re talking about. There was no warning throughout the entire game. Then you wait until there’s a minute left in the game to make a call like that? It’s tough. Lost for words. It’s tough.”
Referee Carl Cheffers responded, pointing out that judge Mike Carr saw Toney line up offside.
“Ultimately, they are responsible for wherever they line up,” Cheffers said.
“No warning is required, especially if they are lined up so far offsides where they’re actually blocking our view of the ball.”
“We would give them a warning if it was anywhere close, but this particular one is beyond a warning.”
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said that neither he nor his receivers were given an offside warning.
Reid called that “a bit embarrassing in the National Football League for that to take place.”
Mahomes said the lateral by Kelce was “a legendary moment.”
It’s a legendary moment, though, that no matter what side you’re on, it will not officially count.
