The Dallas Cowboys selected Tyler Guyton with their first pick of the NFL Draft and his addition addresses a key issue for Jerry Jones.
The rookie out of Oklahoma will be a new face for Cowboys faithful to cheer on and find out about his history here.
Position
Guyton has joined the Dallas Cowboys as a first-rounder to play left tackle. The departure of stater and legend Tyron Smith made drafting a tackle a massive priority.
Tyler Smith has finished at left guard and earned First-Team All-Pro honors in 2023. Therefore, Guyton will play at left tackle and protect Dak Prescott’s blindside.
Draft pick number
The 22-year-old was the seventh offensive tackle taken off the board in the opening round.
America’s Team traded backward with the Detroit Lions from #24 to earn an additional third-round pick.
Dallas moved back to #29 and chose Tyler Guyton to cap off an opening round that favored the offensive positions.

Combine results
Guyton scored an impressive 81 in both his production and athleticism which ranked him as the 6th best OT.
He is extremely athletic and produced a 5.19 40-yard dash time and a 4.17 20-yard shuttle weighing in at 322 pounds. In addition, he recorded 7.5 seconds in his 3-cone drill.
Comparisons
When selected with the 29th overall pick, Guyton was compared to the Seattle Seahawks tackle Abraham Lucas.
The Seahawks O-Lineman has started and played in 22 games. Unfortunately, Lucas suffered a knee injury on the opening day in 2023 and endured a lengthy spell on the sideline.
Both players were deemed one of the best blockers in their class and Guyton can be a destructive player in the run game.
Strengths
The first skill analysts have noticed on tape with the tackle is his agility when run blocking and pass protecting.
In addition, Guyton has a powerful natural grip which allows him to keep pass rushers at bay and gives his quarterback time in the pocket.
He has shown the power to put edge rushers and linebackers to the ground and demonstrates the intelligence of being able to read the game as plays develop.
College record
Guyton’s development was hindered in his freshman year and was redshirted playing just one game at TCU.
In his sophomore year, he started eight games, sharing his responsibility between offensive tackle and H-Back.
However, he transferred to Oklahoma, playing 400 snaps in his first year and only allowed two sacks.
The 22-year-old played as the starting right tackle for the Sooners in his final year but now is the Cowboys’ project at left tackle.
Prospects/prediction
The Dallas Cowboys are in desperate need of a starter at left tackle, analysts have assumed Guyton will be their man.
Reports have stated that the twenty-ninth pick of the draft is versatile enough to play at both tackle positions.
Per his NFL Combine report, he is predicted to become a very good starter within two years.
