Star defensive back, Trevon Diggs, suffered a season ending injury to the Cowboys dismay early in the 2023 season.
It was early into last season when disaster struck. The Dallas Cowboys cornerback was practicing one-on-one drills during a session on the 21st of September 2023. Unfortunately, the 25-year-old tore his ACL while training and was seen hobbling on crutches after the MRI scan was all but conclusive.
Trevon Diggs had begun the season looking very sharp, and this was a blow for the coaching staff, his teammates, and fans alike.
Diggs extension
Only months before, the cornerback’s services rewarded him with a bumper new contract extension with the Cowboys. A lucrative deal worth $97 million over the course of five years, with bonuses potentially reaching north of $104 million.
Therefore, optimism was high for Diggs as the season creeped nearer hoping he would produce another stellar season. The 2023 season started with a bang as the Cowboys crushed the New York Jets with Diggs registering an interception. A monstrous shutout the following week for the New York Giants meant the Cowboys were flying defensively.
The round two pick of the 2020 draft was dealt devastating news as his season was now over. A star player like Diggs was certainly missed as the Cowboys endured another ultimately underwhelming season.
Despite being able to walk off the training pitch on his own, the injury was diagnosed as severe enough to sideline him for the remainder of the season.
It was an unfortunate injury, head coach Mike McCarthy was quick to express his sympathy for Diggs but looked at the situation optimistically: ‘Obviously you feel sick [for] him. It is definitely a punch to the gut for our football team, but this is an opportunity for our defensive depth to stand up and continue to more forward.’

Road to recovery
In late October 2023, the Alabama graduate successfully underwent surgery for his damaged ACL.
According to NFL media reports, the Cowboys are poised for the return of Trevon Diggs for the 2024 season. Post surgery, Diggs has been completing rehabilitation as he strives to return to his very best.
Diggs has stayed quiet on his recovery on social media, working hard in the background to ensure he is fit and healthy to return.
A defensive star of Diggs’ talent is paramount for the Cowboys to make a Super Bowl charge next season.
