Travis Kelce has weighed in on the Patrick Mahomes vs Tom Brady debate, saying his Chiefs teammate might even surpass TB12 one day.

Patrick Mahomes is already one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in NFL history. The Chiefs QB is the reigning NFL MVP and Super Bowl MVP, having won the second Super Bowl title of his career last season.

He has thrown for at least 4,000 yards in each of the past five seasons, with at least 30 touchdown passes in all but one of those seasons.

Mahomes has also been named to 5 Pro Bowls and 2 First Team All-Pro’s, however, for many he still has a way to go to catch the GOAT.

Travis Kelce shares his thoughts on the Patrick Mahomes vs Tom Brady debate

Tom Brady is pretty much the unanimous NFL GOAT, having won a record 7 Super Bowl titles and 5 Super Bowl MVPs. He has the most career passing yards, completions, touchdown passes of any QB in history and is the NFL leader in career quarterback wins, quarterback regular season wins, quarterback playoff wins.

When he retired last season at the age of 45, many felt his status as the greatest of all time would never be touched. That may well be the case, but Kansas TE Travis Kelce thinks Mahomes has a chance of doing it.

“Obviously, I got all the respect for Tom Brady,” Kelce said on a recent episode of the “I Am Athlete” podcast. “He’s the GOAT and the best to ever do it, but I think the rate Pat is at, how he’s doing it, I think it’s a little more all on Pat than Brady. At least Brady’s first couple of years, to where Pat is now, and that’s only going to keep evolving, and it’s only going to keep going up.”

Mahomes’ start to his career is an advantage

Kelce thinks that because Mahomes is starting his career quicker than Brady, it gives him a good chance of surpassing him.

In his first five seasons as a starter, Mahomes has more MVPs (2-0), Pro Bowl selections (5-3), passing yards (23,957-18,029) and passing TDs (192-123) than Brady did in his first five years starting:

However, it’s the longevity of Brady that makes him so difficult to surpass. Brady played for the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers for 23 seasons until the age of 45. Brady was able to navigate the greatest threat to legacy – injury – superbly, which allowed him to play at such a high level so late in his career.

Mahomes would have to maintain a ridiculous level consistency over the next 10-15 years and avoid injury to get near Brady’s records.

Brady’s 7 Super Bowls may just be out of reach

There’s also the small matter of Super Bowls to take into consideration – Mahomes’ two to Brady’s seven.

Even Kelce admitted that just matching that total will be a huge challenge for Mahomes.

“So I think [Mahomes] will catch [Brady] in all the accolades,” Kelce said. “But I think the biggest thing is always going to be those Super Bowls. That’s a lot of Super Bowls.”

It’s testament to Mahomes’ greatness that we’re even having this conversation. In a Mahomes-less universe the notion that Brady can be surpassed wouldn’t even be worth entertaining. However, in a world where Mahomes is very much real, it just might happen.

If anyone can do it, Pat can.
