Andy Reid will go down as one of the best coaches in NFL history and his turnaround of the Chiefs franchise is historical.
However, there may have never been any ‘Big Red’ in Missouri as it was reported he was close to joining the Cardinals as their head coach.
In 2013. Reid was fired as the Philadelphia Eagles head coach and was on the hunt for another role.
Arizona had just fired Ken Whisenhunt after just one year in the hot seat.
Andy Reid was set to join the Cardinals
Adam Schefter posted on X: “One league source said he was ‘95%’ certain former Eagles HC Andy Reid will wind up coaching the Cardinals.”
Clark Hunt and the Chiefs had other ideas.
Kansas City had just come off their disaster of a season finishing 2-14 and had secured the number one pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.
Romeo Crennel had been dismissed from his duties in December 2012 and the new head coach search was on.
Moreover, the next decision by Hunt would alter the course of history for the franchise.

Chiefs stop Reid at the airport
The Chiefs’ front office decided to drop what they were doing and intercept Reid.
The 66-year-old had packed up his luggage and was heading to the airport.
Once at the airport, before he could catch his flight to Phoenix, the Chiefs stopped Reid in his tracks.
Incredibly, they conducted their interview with Andy Reid right there and then – wasting no time.
Ironically, the Chiefs had a scheduled interview with the Los Angeles native after the Cardinals.
But refused the Cardinals the chance to work their magic.
If Reid had been able to reach his interview in Phoenix, he may have never landed in Missouri.
Clark Hunt’s decision created a dynasty
Clark Hunt and his team hired their future dynasty creator on the spot at the airport.
It was a daring move that has reaped so much reward, with three Super Bowls already, and hopefully more to come.
We will never know what the future would have held for the franchise if the appointment was not made.
Cardinals fans must lose sleep some at night when reminded of this ‘what if’ moment.
