There is very little doubt the most recent Super Bowl was a contest of the two best teams in the NFL; the talent on display was a spectacle.

Two of the most talented roasters in the NFL squared off against each other, with both teams stacked with countless playmakers capable of swinging the tie in each other’s favor.

An unexpected threat

When the Chiefs captured the Super Bowl crown in overtime, it was Patrick Mahomes who was placed on the throne and awarded the MVP award.

The four-time Super Bowl champions were pushed right to the very end by the San Francisco 49ers and had to use all their experience to win American football’s biggest prize.

Steve Spagnuolo has had to prepare his Chiefs defense for a varying number of quarterbacks throughout the season, who all have their own unique skills that can expose their defense.

However, in the wake of their Super Bowl win, there was one player who had gained a great level of respect from the Chiefs defensive coordinator.

When appearing on the ‘The Season’ podcast hosted by Peter Schrager, Spagnuolo was very complimentary about the opposing QB Brock Purdy: “I think Brock Purdy, he’s terrific.

“We played Tua, we played Josh Allen, we played Lamar Jackson, and you’ve got to worry about those guys already running the football. Maybe he’s not a runner maybe we can get a little break here.

“I put the film on and he’s ripping Green Bay into shreds a couple of run plays. I said OK here we go we’ve got another one.”

Purdy’s rapid rise

Purdy can be nothing but proud of his performance in Super Bowl LVIII regardless of the outcome.

It has been less than two years since the moment Brock Purdy was selected as the last pick of the 2022 NFL Draft – 262nd pick.

With expected starter Trey Lance injured in week two and back up quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo out in week 14; all eyes turned to Purdy in the 2022 season.

In his first season he guided the 49ers to an NFC Championship appearance, bailing out to the Philadelphia Eagles. In 2023, the 24-year-old went one step further but fell short against the Chiefs.

Spagnuolo was full of such admiration for the Arizona native, that he made it his mission to find his mobile number and send him a message: “I’ll be honest with you, I texted Brock the other day I tried to track down his cell number, I just wanted to tell him the respect I had for him and what a terrific game he played.

“He’s such a quality guy, strong Christian man and I respect all of that and I’m happy for all his success.”

To receive a message from such a legendary coordinator in the NFL, is testament to the performance from the man nicknamed ‘Mr Irrelevant’.

The Chief’s DC can clearly in vision that Purdy is going to be real superstar.

Chiefs Kingdom can certainly admire the evidence of a potential superstar emerging in the sport, as Patrick Mahomes was just as influential when he burst onto the scene.
