Stephen A. Smith thinks the Chiefs are currently the fourth-best team in the NFL

Stephen A. Smith thinks the Kansas City Chiefs are currently the fourth-best team in the NFL in his latest power rankings.

The Chiefs currently have the longest active winning streak in the league (five straight) after the 49ers and Eagles dropped a surprise game in Week 6.

Kansas City share the best record in the NFL at 5-1 and are comfortably 1st in the AFC West. However, something has been off about the defending Super Bowl champions this season, particularly on offense.

They’re undoubtedly still one of the best in the NFL, as any team would be with Patrick Mahomes throwing the football. But they’re not exactly firing on all cylinders, as the weak receiver group and overreliance on Travis Kelce has exposed certain limitations, and dare we say it, vulnerabilities.

The Chiefs evidently must improve if they’re to defend their Super Bowl crown come February. First Take’s Stephen A. Smith also agrees, as he currently has three teams ahead of the Chiefs in his latest power rankings.

Through six weeks of the season, Smith has Kansas as the fourth-best team in the NFL, behind the Lions, 49ers and Dolphins.

The up-and-coming Lions are perhaps the surprise package here, but given their 5-1 start to the season, which includes a Week 1 victory over the Chiefs, it’s hard to disagree.

Chiefs clicking into gear could spell curtains for NFL

By their lofty standards, the Chiefs are stuttering somewhat. They only have only one win against a team with a winning record, and have surpassed the 30-point mark just once after doing so three times in the first six games of last season.

They rank ninth in points and fourth in total yards, while Mahomes is posting the worst passer rating of his career and is ninth in the league in adjusted net yards per attempt.

However, it’s only a matter of time before Mahomes finds his groove. He’s too good not to.

And when he does, if the defense continues to play as it has been doing all season it could spell curtains for the rest of the league.

By all accounts Kansas has had a lacklustre start to the season, and yet they still remain one of the best teams in the league. It’s a gentle reminder of this team’s ceiling and that when they do start to click how frightening of a proposition they’ll be.
