The Dallas Cowboys are still the biggest threat to the San Francisco 49ers to win the NFC, says Stephen A Smith.
The Dallas Cowboys have taken a battering in the media after a dispiriting 31-10 loss to the Bills in Week 15.
But despite the loss, the Cowboys secured a play-off berth, and the team will have their say when January begins.
In the NFC, the 49ers are the heavy favourites to reach the Super Bowl, and have knocked the Cowboys out in successive years. They also won easily when the two teams met early this season.
One of the Cowboys’ biggest detractors believes they are still the 49ers biggest rivals, despite the miserable loss to the Bills.
Dallas Cowboys are dangerous
Speaking to ESPN after the Philadelphia Eagles suffered a late defeat on Monday Night Football to the Seattle Seahawks, Stephen A Smith says he reluctantly believes the Cowboys are the biggest danger to the 49ers.
That said, he does not believes Mike McCarthy’s team can go to San Francisco and win.
He explained: “I’m going to be going with the Dallas Cowboys as being the biggest threat, despite what just happened to them against the Buffalo Bills. Because in the NFC, it’s by default.
“If you’re Detroit I got questions about you, I can’t. The Dallas Cowboys have the capability to get into a shootout with anybody. That’s what I’m holding onto.
“I’m not saying they would win, of course I’m not saying that, but when I look at Detroit, and how up and down they’ve been even though their record is 10-4, when I look at Philadelphia, also 10-4, I’m just looking at them right now, and at this moment the Cowboys are the biggest threat against the 49ers.”
Dallas beat Philadelphia in Week 14, and last year’s Super Bowl runners-up have now lost three games in a row, beaten by the 49ers in Week 13.
The NFC does feel like it is the 49ers to lose. Dallas will be heavy underdogs to beat them, but America’s Team go into every game aiming to win, and Mike McCarthy must find a way to steer his team to victory if the two franchises do battle again in the play-offs.
