You can add Travis Kelce to the long list of athletes to incur the wrath of Stephen A Smith.
The sports personality, known for his tirades, had some strong words for the Kansas City Chiefs tight end this week.
His message to Kelce is clear: stop vouching for your teammate.
That’s something Kelce, Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid, among others, have been doing a lot of this season, most recently for Kadarius Toney following his offside call, which cost them a potential victory against the Buffalo Bills.
Smith Bringing the “Receipts”
While it isn’t exactly a war of words, Smith is fed up with all the support the Chiefs tight end is giving his team, specifically the wide receivers.
As he put it on his Friday podcast, Smith brought the receipts, and he’s coming after the Chiefs leading pass catcher.

“Your receivers have dropped 33 passes this year,’ Smith said on his podcast. ’33, dog. 33,” Smith said.
“Not even all of those COVID-19 vaccine commercials – with that smile on your face – gonna hide that,’ Smith said, referring to Kelce’s Pfizer vaccine endorsements. “Hell, rather than get those vaccine shots, your receivers should get some velcro attached to their hands, so they will catch the damn football. C’mon bro, these are professionals.”
This feud, instigated by Smith, began when Kelce came out in defence of Toney on his podcast “New Heights” alongside his brother Jason.
“This is a group effort, and when you turn the film on, what’s real is that we’ve got guys that can play this game, and we’ve got guys that we can have success with and win championships with,” Kelce said.
Few deny the fact that Chief wide receivers are struggling, but there’s one detail Smith didn’t get quite right.
Technically, there’ve been 34 drops by Chief wide receivers this season.
Patrick Mahomes’ has seen 34 of his passes hit the ground and backup Blaine Gabbert one.
Their top wide receiver, Rashee Rice also leads the team in drops with eight.
Poking the Bear
Despite all the criticism against the Chiefs offense, some from their own fans, Kelce says he remains confident they can go all the way.
“All this I hear in the media about who the Chiefs are, it’s only building that beast. It’s only going to keep making us better and better going through these learning experiences and these tough games. In years past, we found ways to win these games, and I think this year we’re finding ways to keep getting better every single week.”
Smith, though, isn’t having any of Kelce’s words.
“Respectfully, bro, you need to stop that ____” said Smith.
“In 13 games this season, Kadarius Toney, in second halves this season has a total of seven catches for nine yards.”
“You know I am not making this up, Travis; you know I bring receipts. … Y’all ain’t getting it done. The reigning, defending Super Bowl champions have a plethora of receivers who can’t catch the damn football.”
The Chiefs’ next chance to silence the critics comes on Sunday at Foxborough, battling the 3-10 New England Patriots.
