A wide receiver who’s been getting a ton of attention for all the wrong reasons has the full support of his teammates.
The Kadarius Toney penalty, which nullified a go-ahead touchdown by the Kansas City Chiefs last Sunday, might be the most talked about offside call we’ve ever seen.
While his mistake cost the Chiefs the game against the Buffalo Bills, many people are coming to his defence.
Chiefs in Toney’s Corner
It’s no secret that 2023 has been a difficult one for Kansas City wide receivers and, in particular, Kadarius Toney.
In a dozen games this season, the 24-year-old from Mobile, Alabama, has 25 catches for 164 yards and a touchdown.
Toney is the latest Chiefs wideout to be vilified for a mistake, joining Marquez Valdes-Scantling, whose drop versus the Eagles cost KC a few weeks ago.

In fairness to those two, though, no Chiefs wide receiver outside of rookie Rashee Rice has been spectacular this season.
Chiefs quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, had a message for Toney this week.
“Just be you,” Mahomes said he told Toney, whose offside penalty late against the Bills cost the Chiefs a go-ahead 49-yard touchdown. “That’s all you can do in life or in this league. You’re going to make mistakes. Stuff’s going to happen in your life. How do you accept that adversity and get past it, and do it the right way?
“You make one mistake; that’s not going to define you. It’s going to be how you respond to that mistake.”
While Toney’s penalty was not his first error this season, head coach Andy Reid said he would remain in the lineup.
“Bang-Bang” Play
Toney is receiving primarily negative reviews, but many are singing the praises of Travis Kelce for that lateral, which nearly won them the game.
On his podcast “New Heights” with brother Jason, Kelce discussed that lateral, calling it a “bang-bang” play.
Kelce said he didn’t look at Andy Reid following that play out of fear of the tongue-lashing he might receive should that lateral get deflected or cause a turnover.
Like Mahomes and Reid, Kelce is also behind Toney.
“There’s a lot of media pointing fingers on the skill players on our team, I say ___ that.”
“Excuse my language, we usually cuss in lighthearted ways, but you guys had to feel that whoever is talking ____ on our skill players and our offense.”
“This is a group effort, and when you turn the film on, what’s real is that we’ve got guys that can play this game, and we’ve got guys that we can have success with and win championships with.”
Kansas City’s two-game losing streak has dropped them into the #3 seed in the AFC, meaning they’ll need either the Dolphins or Ravens to slip up if they are to avoid playing in the Wild Card Round.
Three of their remaining four games are against teams with losing records, including this weekend when they face the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium.
