Patrick Mahomes’ athletic ability, game intelligence and improvisation skills make him an inevitable star in American football.

In 2017, the Kansas City Chiefs found their gold when they selected Patrick Mahomes as the tenth overall pick in the NFL Draft. The arrival of the young quarterback to the team marked the beginning of a new era of success for the franchise. At just 28 years old, Mahomes already boasts an impressive resume of achievements.

Since his first year as a starter in 2018, he has been a dominant force on the field, leading the Chiefs to several thrilling victories and clinching the MVP award in Super Bowl LIV in 2020, when the QB guided the team to victory over the San Francisco 49ers.

Winning his third title made him the second youngest three-time champion quarterback in NFL history, behind only Tom Brady.

Mahomes has also become an important figure from a racial point of view. As a biracial player, the signal-caller is an inspiration to many young black people.

The influence of black quarterbacks on Mahomes’ success

Doug Williams, the first black quarterback to win a Super Bowl, helped pave the way for a new generation of talent.

New Pittsburgh Steeler Russell Wilson, in an interview for the Essence magazine, reflected on his role in the NFL and his race as strong factors in the success of new quarterbacks who have reached the professional league and broken barriers.

“When I came into the league, there were only a few of us. It was Cam Newton, Robert Griffin III, Colin Kaepernick, myself and a couple others”, he said.

Players like Warren Moon, Randall Cunningham and Michael Vick also need to be taken into consideration because they all had major impact on the game. Wilson admires them for leaving a legacy for new afroamerican QBs: “I think about those guys before me.”

He can visualise the league’s racial progress. “What I love to see is guys getting drafted early, and that a lot of teams these days have black quarterbacks playing for them”, claimed.

Wilson recognises that his presence has influenced the success of the NFL’s current best signal-caller and defending champion.

“For me to be able to go to back-to-back Super Bowls, and win one of them, I think opened up a lot of doors. Now you see guys like Patrick Mahomes who won it; it’s really just us so far, but there’s more to come.”

Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts, Cam Newton, young C.J. Stroud… the list is extensive and so is the talent.
