Patrick Mahomes knows the Chiefs need more “consistency” on offense

After their win against the Dolphins in Germany, QB Patrick Mahomes has called for more ‘consistency’ in the Chiefs offense.

The Chiefs game against the Dolphins in Frankfurt, Germany, was billed as the premier matchup in the NFL this weekend.

Most people expected a high-scoring thriller between two of the best teams in the AFC. What we actually got was a mistake-filled game largely won off the back of the Chiefs’ defense.

Andy Reid: “We did some great things and then we sputtered at times”

From a Chief’s perspective, the game followed a similar pattern to what we’ve seen for most of the season: stellar defense combined with a hit-and-miss offense that can look excellent on some possessions and terrible on others.

Kansas took a 21-point lead into halftime, fueled by an exceptional opening drive and some fantastic defense. However, they were held scoreless in the second half, and its offense only contributed 14 points in the game.

Once again, outside of Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce’s individual brilliance, there’s little else to write home about in terms of the offense.

The wide receivers have been a problem all season, with Reid himself admitting the team sputtered at times, which was due to bad decision-making and bad execution.

“Offensively, we did some great things and then we sputtered at times,” Reid said. “But I would tell you that first drive was a thing of beauty and then the next touchdown was also a good job of getting ourselves upfield and scoring on that.”

“Listen, we’re 6-2 sitting there with the Dolphins coming into this,” Reid said. “Knowing that they’re one of the better teams in the AFC. I love the energy [and] the way our guys rebounded from the last game against Denver… all of those things are so important to making up a good football team, and our guys did that. Last week, we were off. This one here, they weren’t going there, and you could just feel it.”

The offense did start off hot, though, which allowed the Chiefs to jump out to an opening lead which the defense could hold onto.

It didn’t do much else though. Skyy Moore led Kansas City’s wide receivers Sunday with two catches for 33 yards. Tight end Noah Gray had a team-high three catches for 34 yards, while Kelce was held to just three catches for 14 yards. Mahomes had 185 yards and 2 TDs.

After the game, Mahomes spoke about the team’s need for consistency on offense.

“I think you can see it in spurts,” Mahomes said. “You look at the first drive, you look at the 90-yard drive that we had, you can see that we can do it. It’s just about being consistent on every single drive. Obviously, penalties and then me not connecting with guys deep down the field hurt us but luckily for us, our defense is playing its tail off and we got the win.”

“I think all you can do is keep working,” Mahomes added. “That’s everything. It’s me with timing, it’s them just continuing to get catches as much as possible. Luckily for us, our defense is playing so good so we’re sitting here 7-2 going into the bye, but we can get a lot better as an offense. I think if the offense gets to where I think it can be, we’re going to be a hard team to beat.”

The Chiefs now have a bye, where hopefully they will use the time to iron out some of their offensive issues.
