Tyreek Hill says he never wanted to leave the Chiefs

Former Chiefs All-Pro receiver Tyreek Hill has gone public about what the idea was behind his trade request.

Hill, who currently leads the NFL in receiving yards this season, recently sat down with former star wideout Brandon Marshall on the show I am Athlete where he discussed the reasoning behind the move.

The new details come as the Chiefs and Miami Dolphins prepare to square off in Germany on Sunday.

Trade Request “Bait” according to Hill

It has been over a year and a half since the Chiefs traded Tyreek to the Dolphins for a 2022 first-round pick, a 2022 second-round selection, two fourth-round picks, and a 2023 sixth-round choice.

Shortly after that move was made, Hill was able to parlay that into a massive payday in South Beach to the tune of four years and $120 million, with $72.2 million in guarantees, making him the highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL.

Days before Hill and the #1 ranked offense take to the field in Frankfurt, the four-time All-Pro receiver says he wanted to remain a Chiefs.

That would seem to contradict the fact that he and his agent requested a trade during the 2022 off-season.

However, Hill shared his side of the story as he saw it when it came to that request.

“You know what? To be honest, it was a situation where like my agent (Drew Rosenhaus) was trying to bait KC into giving me a contract. The idea was to never leave KC, and that’s the first thing I told my agent, by the way.

“I got on the phone, he was like, ‘Reek, I’m gonna fly down to you tomorrow, we gonna talk about our plan of attack to how we gonna get you a new contract in KC.’

“And I was like look, as long as I don’t get traded, because we just lost in the AFC Championship. I’m trying to get back at the Bengals bro, it’s like, ‘Okay, cool. We not gonna get traded, we just gonna get you a new deal.”

Next, Hill says his agent flew down to Kansas City to speak to the club while also having a phone conversation with general manager Brett Veach before talking with Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid, both of whom, according to Hill, assured him he’d be taken care of.

Guaranteed money appears to have been where the Chiefs and Hill’s agent were at odds, and according to Hill, Rosenhaus advised him that he needed assurances about being paid.

“So, the Chiefs weren’t budging at all, that’s when you know I guess the trade began to come into Drew’s head. He was like, “Reek, we gonna get you traded for what you deserve.’

“I’m like, ‘What do I deserve?’ He’s like, ‘Bro, you deserve at least $70 million. I’ve been with you for four years now like and I see the potential.”

In the end, Hill says that he put his trust in Rosenhaus, and from there, it was clear his time in KC was ending, adding that the Dolphins and New York Jets were in the running for his services.

The Jets offered him more guaranteed money, which is when Hill’s mom stepped in and noted that in Florida, there are no state taxes; a deal with the Dolphins occurred, and the rest, as they say, is history.
