As long as Patrick Mahomes wants to, Kansas City will always be surrounded by the best conditions and great players.
Salary cap space didn’t seem to be a issue for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2024, until two big moves caused a little concern for the three-peat obsessed team.
The long-term, high-extension of defensive tackle Chris Jones plus the placement of L’Jarius Sneed on the ‘non-exclusive’ franchise tag limited KC’s potential additions to further solidify the roster.
But that was never a real problem, because Mahomes was out there to be the ringleader he is and help the Chiefs no matter what.
He has agreed to restructure his contract to open up significant space on the team’s salary cap. The adjustment has released $21.6 million to the franchise. And Mahomes hasn’t been “harmed” either – his cap hit has risen sharply for the next four seasons.
The ‘Mahomes way’ of doing things
It’s the second time the Kansas City QB has agreed to restructure his contract for the benefit of his team. In 2021, he revised a 10-year deal worth $450 million to relieve the Chiefs’ budget situation.
On his show, Dan Patrick made a point of recognizing the big decision made by Mahomes.
“Patrick Mahomes is doing the wise thing by deferring money. He’s investing in himself and Kansas City will reap the benefits.”
The sportscaster even compared him to multi-champion Tom Brady and said that he is following the same path.
“Tom Brady restructured his contract quite a few times in New England. Six Super Bowls later in NE and we know how that helped that team.”

“Mahomes is competing with Tom Brady. He’s already a Hall Of Famer and now you wanna see if you can get to seven Super Bowls.”
“Patrick Mahomes is following that blueprint, because if you go back to 2020, he had a ‘team friendly deal’. I said ‘in this contract we will be underpaid – he’s already underpaid’. But He decided that he was going to free up over 20 million in cap space this offseason. He’s still going to get that money, he just doesn’t get that money now.”
Looking ahead to the Draft, Brett Veach will have more important choices to make to keep the dynasty alive.
- 1st round, No. 32
- 2nd round, No. 64
- 3rd round: No. 95
- 4th round: No. 132
- 5th round: No. 159 (via Cowboys)
- 5th round: No. 173 (compensatory)
- 7th round: No. 252
It’s also important to remember that Kansas City needs to focus on its most vulnerable positions, i.e. wide receiver and left tackle.
