The Dallas Cowboys are prepared to trim the fat during the offseason and one of the casualties is their wide receiver, Michael Gallup.
Yesterday the Cowboys’ own website reported the team set to grant Michael Gallup permission to seek a trade away from Dallas.
The 28-year-old never managed to build upon his impressive sophomore season sporting the blue star.
Michael Gallup progress stalled
In 2019, Gallup hauled in 66 catches for 1,107 yards, averaging 16.8 yards per catch alongside recording 6 touchdowns – these are all career highs.
Since then, he has struggled to produce numbers close to his best year.
Additionally, in 2021, Gallup suffered a calf injury on the opening week. He was only activated off the injured reserve on November 13th. An ACL tear in week 17 against the Arizona Cardinals capped off a disappointing season.
On the 13th of March, the wideout was given a five-year deal worth $62.5 million.
However, the faith that the Cowboys instilled in Gallup has not paid off as he failed to receive more than 500 yards in both the following seasons.

A change of direction
America’s Team is looking to go down a different avenue and Gallup is not considered to be financially viable in their plans.
Jerry Jones wants to get Gallup off the wage bill but this could prove to be a deterrent for other franchises.
With a reported wage of $13 million and a multiple of underwhelming seasons, it will be hard to attract many suitors.
Veteran Cowboys reporter Mike Fisher believes there will be little interest from any team: “The likelihood that someone is going to give up a draft pick to take up Michael Gallup and his salary, that would be a numbskull move.”
No interest so far
Since the emergence of the trade opportunity for other franchises, there has been little to report, but the Carolina Panthers have said to be interested.
Fisher believes this to be untrue and it is just an agent trying to create a narrative: “Even though ESPN is telling us the Carolina Panthers might be interested.
“I bet that comes from an agent telling ESPN can they please write that someone is interested please please please.”
America’s Team gambled on Michael Gallup during his ACL rehab and is now regretting their decision with the big extension.
Trading away the Georgia native is an instrument to try and soften the financial blow.
Nonetheless, there seems to be initially very minimal interest in the receiver.
The Cowboys may find it a challenge to shift him.
