The Kansas City Chiefs have addressed a crucial offseason position, the backup quarterback role.
Patrick Mahomes has had an impenetrable health record since becoming the starter in Missouri.
The 28-year-old has played no less than 14 games per season since taking over from Alex Smith.
One of the problems people always pondered, is who would support Mahomes if he was injured?
Carson Wentz joins as number two
For the 2024 season, Chris Oladokun was penciled in as the second choice to the two-time MVP.
Now, Carson Wentz has been signed from free agency on a one-year deal.
The former Super Bowl winner will be the established second choice at QB.
Wentz’s previous supporting gig was with the L.A. Rams, serving as protection if Matthew Stafford was to get injured.
However, before Wentz signed his name on the Chiefs contract, two NFL experts tipped another player to be Mahomes’ backup.

Zach Wilson tipped for Chiefs’ backup
The out-of-favor Zach Wilson was predicted as a viable option for the Chiefs.
Since his draft in 2021, the 24-year-old has endured a turbulent career.
From being the second pick in the NFL Draft to now being cast aside in the Big Apple, his career has taken a massive U-turn.
It is now public knowledge the New York Jets wanted nothing to do with Wilson.
But Mike Florio and Chris Simms on Pro Football Talk, said he was their favored player to support Mahomes.
Florio claimed: “I think they (Chiefs) may have wanted Zach Wilson.
“I haven’t heard that but they are one of the teams where you look at depth chat and say, ‘Whose backing up Patrick Mahomes’. Well for now it’s Carson Wentz.
“We had always thought that Zach Wilson would be a good fit in Kansas City, learn from Andy Reid, learn from Patrick Mahomes, turn your career around, and hit the hard reset button.”
‘Wilson made sense there’
Former quarterback Chris Simms supported Florio’s point: “You and I both thought that Zach Wilson made sense there.”
Simms suggested that Wilson would have been good as the third choice and take a breather away from the game.
Despite this, the Jets wanted to trade Wilson but there was no value in that for any franchise.
As a result, the Jets have said they are keeping him.
Ultimately, Wentz is now in the position behind Mahomes.
If Mahomes’ injury record stays true, Wentz will not see a snap unless they rest the three-time Super Bowl winner.
