Mina Kimes pinpoints position on Chiefs’ roster which could be a concern in 2024

The Kansas City Chiefs’ roster is taking shape ahead of the 2024 season.

You can’t say that defense is a problem for KC, even more so after they signed Chris Jones to a huge contract and secured most of the defenders for this year.

However, the departure of L’Jarius Sneed has left a gap that is difficult to fill with someone capable of surpassing his performance.

Jaden Hicks and Kamal Hadden were chosen in the Draft and may eventually play a few games.

Mina Kimes sees the Chiefs’ secondary as the team’s only possible problem

To say that Kansas City has a 100 per cent squad in all units would not quite be true.

NFL expert Mina Kimes, on Friday’s edition of NFL Live, pointed to the franchise’s secondary as the only sector that could possibly be “fragile”.

“We can’t just say, ‘Oh, they have Patrick Mahomes, they’ll be fine’. And it’s about their secondary to me,” claimed.

Kimes didn’t discredit the Chiefs’ cornerback depth chart, on the contrary.

“They move on from L’Jarius Sneed and look, Steve Spagnuolo has done an absolutely fantastic job with his young DBs, and you’re probably looking at Josh Williams, Jalen Watson playing on the outside, McDuffie moves inside in sub packages and they do have experience, valuable experience now.”

Spagnuolo could face challenges next season

Sneed’s presence took the secondary team to a higher level. His talent allowed the offensive coordinator to explore new ways of putting pressure on opposing teams.

“Sneed is not your average cornerback to just move on from, he was one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL last year. His ability to play press man at really the highest level in the league is what enables Spagnuolo to do so much with his pressure packages – so there could be a little bit of a transition there as they move on fully to these young corners. And I wouldn’t be surprised.”

But we know that doubting Spagnuolo comes to nothing. He’s won KC’s three Super Bowls with an extremely young defense in the last five years.
