Michael Irvin says he would have liked Dallas Cowboys to sign new Las Vegas Raiders star

Cowboys legend Michael Irvin has recently stated that he would have liked the Dallas Cowboys to have picked up one of the best free agents on the market.

Christian Wilkins was forced to be let go by the Miami Dolphins and they chose not to franchise tag him.

The defensive interior lineman’s rookie deal expired after the Dolphins had activated his fifth-year option in 2022.

Christian Wilkins leaves Miami

Now, Wilkins was looking to be paid big money, something the franchise could not afford.

They already have the highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL, Tyreek Hill.

Cap space was a major issue with the Florida-based team, therefore Wilkins hit free agency.

Moreover, the 28-year-old produced nine sacks in 2023 – a career high.

Fellow defensive tackle Chris Jones did not hit free agency and signed a new deal with the Chiefs.

This made Wilkins the best free agent in his position.

A lucrative contract did come the way of the deserving Wilkins, and the Las Vegas Raiders are his new employer.

He joins alongside three-time Pro Bowler Maxx Crosby on the defensive line – a scary duo.

Wilkins’ new deal is worth $110 million over four years with $84.75 million guaranteed.

Irvin wanted Wilkins

Cowboys legendary wide receiver spoke on the Rich Eisen Show, and he said he wanted Wilkins: “The only person in this earlier run that I wish Jerry [Jones] could have done and I would have said stretch the money for is Christian Wilkins.

“That big fella that the Raiders just signed, if the Cowboys could have got a big fella like that, I know $85 million dollars guaranteed is a lot of money, but that speaks to your leak!

“That’s where you’ve been leaking, big defensive tackle that can also get to the quarterback, that can stop and help with the run defense and put less pressure on the linebackers you do not have.”

Clearly, Irvin was disappointed that the Cowboys did not make a move for Wilkins.

Dallas battling the cap

However, with Dak Prescott’s looming $59 million cap hit next season, it would have been a devastating blow to the finances.

They have addressed the linebacker issues with the signing of Eric Kendricks.

The three-time Super Bowl-winning receiver said the Cowboys ‘should have stretched their pocket’ for the now Raider.

The offseason has finally got underway for the Cowboys and new faces will be arriving at The Star if they are serious about a ring.

Jerry Jones and his staff have multiple problems that need sorting.
