Jerry Jones fell asleep at the wheel during the NFL Draft and may have been the reason why the franchise lost their number one running back.
The 81-year-old owner sang Jonathon Brooks’ praises before the Day 2 of the NFL Draft.
He was in awe of the Texas Longhorn talent and labeled him the best player he had interviewed in 30 years.
His son Stephen could just awkwardly smile at the reporters whilst they were giving other teams more ammunition to draft Brooks.
Dallas dealt a major blow with Brooks taken early in the second round
Hours later, the Carolina Panthers traded up to the Indianapolis Colts spot at #46, 10 places before the Cowboys were set to be on the clock.
Jones’ heart must have dropped when the Panthers announced Brooks as their selection.
Therefore, the number one graded rusher was stolen from their board and the Cowboys were blindsided.

America’s Team had mulled over the project of pairing their former First-Team All-Pro Ezekiel Elliott with a rookie running back.
Dallas refused to sign a rusher in the draft because they had higher-graded players in other positions after Operation Brooks failed.
Elliott signs a one-year minimum deal with the Dallas Cowboys
However, Jones reignited talks with Elliott after the draft and they have agreed to a one-year deal worth $3 million.
Elliott will be returning to the franchise where he became a household name and the best rusher in all of football.
The 28-year-old has embarked upon a return because he is desperate to preserve his legacy in Dallas.
After being the highest-paid back in the league in 2019 his production fell off rapidly.
He hopes to make amend and is ecstatic to be running out onto the field at AT&T Stadium once more.
Micah Parsons reacts to his former teammate Ezekiel Elliot returning home
On X, the returning Cowboy posted: “RUN IT BACK.”
Superstar defensive edge rusher Micah Parsons quoted his comment with: “Welcome back king!”
Parsons shares in Elliott’s enthusiasm for throwing on the blue and white jersey for a final time.
For some fans, the jury is still out, whilst others are riding on the high of the nostalgic vibes the three-time Pro Bowler brings.
Cowboys fans will understand that the electric Elliott of old will not be returning.
It has been assumed that the Illinois native will be used for short-yardage and goal-to-go situations.
