The Dallas Cowboys have welcomed new faces in the form of excited rookies but they are embracing the return of a former fan favorite in their latest move.

Former First-Team All-Pro Ezekiel Elliott has agreed to terms with the Dallas Cowboys.

The free agent who left in 2023, spent one season with New England Patriots before landing in free agency once again.

Dallas reporter suggested Elliott could return to Cowboys in free agency

Dallas Morning News reporter Michael Gehlken said in March that a return home for their former running back was worth monitoring.

Before the NFL Draft, reports had confirmed that Jerry Jones had initiated conversations with both player and agent.

The talks were dubbed to be just a general chat but have now materialized in a free agency offer.

In the last few hours, NFL Insider’s Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport confirmed Elliott will be reuniting with the Cowboys pending a physical.

ESPN reporter suggest Elliott is back in Dallas for one reason

Nonetheless, ESPN NFL Insider Jordan Schultz confirmed there was one reason that motivated Elliott to return to Dallas.

On X, Schultz posted: “A source tells me: ‘Zeke wanted his legacy to be a Dallas Cowboy.’ A legend returns to The Star…”

In addition, the 28-year-old had offers on the table from other teams but his legacy as a Cowboys player was more important.

Elliott is the Cowboys’ third-highest rusher in franchise history and was made the highest-paid running back in the league in 2019.

Jerry Jones planned to sign Elliott with a rookie running back

The Cowboys planned to sign Elliott and partner him with a rookie running back whom he could mentor.

Moreover, Dallas was set on drafting Jonathon Brooks but the Carolina Panthers traded up to steal the Texas Longhorn talent.

Jerry Jones had mentioned only hours prior that Brooks was the best player he had interviewed in 30 years.

Now, Elliott may be expected to be the starter going into 2024 and the rookie prospect scheme may have to be put on hold.

Schultz added that Elliott and Jones had drinks at a nearby steakhouse Dee Lincoln Prime which helped seal the deal.

Pending the physical, Cowboy Nation should be expecting their former two-time NFL Rushing Yards Leader to line up in their backfield in 2024.
