‘Love Veach’… Patrick Mahomes thrilled with 21-year-old player picked by Chiefs on Day 2 of NFL Draft

Pat Mahomes has been reacting to all the Chiefs’ picks on social media.

In the second round of the NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs made a strategic move by selecting offensive tackle Kingsley Suamataia, from BYU, with the 63rd pick. He was the 12th OT taken in the event.

This decision was preceded by a shrewd trade, wherein KC traded up with the San Francisco 49ers, relinquishing their 173rd pick in the fifth round in exchange for the 49ers’ 211th pick in the sixth round.

Suamataia, at the age of 21, comes in as another player to protect Mahomes. The franchise’s idea was to rejuvenate the offensive line and shield the quarterback as much as possible.

Knowing Andy Reid, who loves a healthy competition, it’s likely that there will be a contest between the rookie and Wanya Morris for the starting tackle position.

College background

He began his university career at Oregon and then transferred to BYU, where he was a starter in his first year at right tackle. In 2023, Suamataia switched to left tackle and was a starter in all of BYU’s games.

Over two years at BYU, he allowed no sacks in 361 pass blocking snaps.

Sized at 6’4 and weighing 326 pounds, he was selected to the All-Big 12 second team in 2023, attended the NFL Combine and Senior Bowl, and had good performances.

As a curiosity, he is also the cousin of Detroit Lions left tackle Penei Sewell and Chicago Bears linebacker Noah Sewell.

Mahomes is happy with KC’s choice

Shortly after Roger Goodell announced Suamataia, the Chiefs’ quarterback published on his X profile a sort of thank you to general manager Brett Veach for choosing another player to take care of Patrick Mahomes.

Kansas City’s official account on X also shared a joke and tweeted a video of the freshman.
