Las Vegas Raiders make big mistake with Patrick Mahomes comments ‘not meant to be said’

Despite claiming their third Super Bowl in five years, the Kansas City Chiefs had an unflattering regular season by their high standards.

For the first time Patrick Mahomes entered the playoffs in the Wildcard round and did not play a single post-season game at Arrowhead – this was no issue for them though.

The Chiefs unbeaten run

Kansas City went on a six-game win streak at the end of December and all the way through the postseason including victory at Super Bowl LVIII.

Prior to this barn storming run, the Las Vegas Raiders were the last team to hand the soon-to-be world champions their most recent loss. The Raiders did not share the festive cheer to Patrick Mahomes and his crew as they defeated their opponents 20-14 in their own backyard.

The Super Bowl MVP endured a consistent volume of pain throughout the contest, as the Raiders defense only had their sights on burying the quarterback.

They did this by taking inspiration from the Detroit Pistons nemesis method, of having their ‘Jordan Rules’, a strategy which was designed to shutdown Michael Jordan.

Vegas head coach Antonio Pierce designed a similar game plan for the Chiefs star player and showed his team videos of MMA and boxing to demonstrate the level of aggression he wanted to see.

Pierce’s strategy was very rewarding as his defense dominated the Chiefs: one interception, 21 pressures and four sacks were all registered over the course of the game.

First Things First panel unconvinced

After Pierce discussed his Mahomes plan this week, the crew on the First Things First show responded to the so called ‘recipe’ that Pierce proclaims has worked, and should be replicated by all other teams.

Nick Wright had a bizarre reason as to why Mahomes struggled so staggeringly that day:

Wright believes the Chiefs quarterback was distracted in the morning as he engaged in the festivities with his young children and this was the real reason why the Raiders had their successes.

He said: “A Christmas morning with small children and Mahomes’ wife still wanting to do a Christmas routine… I think threw everything off in the that football game.”

Wright refused to believe there was a game changing formula and did not take the new Mahomes blueprint proclamation seriously:

“So the idea that this is the recipe, the blueprint, we have heard this too many times and what we know is there is no blueprint. No, this is obviously absurd and they don’t have a blueprint or a recipe.”

Pierce made all these remarks and claims on Raiders edge rusher Max Crosby’s podcast.

Chris Broussard was annoyed that the head coach went public and should have kept these thoughts within the locker room.

Broussard said: “Saying, ‘We’re just as strong, we’re just as fast, we’re just as strong as the Chiefs, that is great in private and that was not meant to be said publicly.

“We’ve seen Mahomes and the Chiefs say it all year that this stuff just serves as ammunition for them.”

Pierce needs to back up the talk

Now that the Las Vegas Raiders HC has gone public with his so called ‘recipe’, he will now have to back this up continuously and pray Mahomes and company do not manage to formulate a counter-plan.

Chiefs Kingdom now has the experience and backbone to deal with comments just like these ones and will use this to their advantage. Now, the reigning champions have two more occasions minimum next season to set the record straight.

I do not know if Pierce and his men necessarily want to face a fired up Mahomes – they do say you should never poke the bear.
