Kansas City Chiefs updates, practice squad signings and waiver claims

After determining all 53 players on the roster, the Kansas City Chiefs have reached the stage where it’s time to decide which of them deserve to be part of the practice squad and claim talent from other teams.

The NFL franchises are able to keep 16 players on their practice squads. The waiver is an ‘order’ in which teams can pick up players who have been waived by other teams before they become free agents.

This order is defined based on the teams’ campaigns: the worst teams in the league are at the top of the priority list to pick up players who need to go through waivers.

Kansas City is still making their moves, but many have already been done.

Here’s a list of what you need to know to get up to speed on the Chiefs before kickoff:

Players signed to the active roster

KC needed to bring in a new rusher, as it’s risky to rely on only three players in the backfield. He has experience and is also a good weapon when it comes to pass protection, especially knowing left tackle Jawaan Taylor’s health situation. And Patrick Mahomes really needs that in 2024.

Chiefs waiver claims

His arrival in the cornerback corps looks more like a gamble by Steve Spagnuolo in the midst of a unit that doesn’t have an absolute starter. Scott didn’t play a single regular season game for the Cowboys in 2023, but managed to show a little something or other in the last few pre-season games.

Players signed to the practice squad

Adding Bailey Zappe to the PS is great for the players who are training in it. It means nothing but more confidence in Mahomes and his backup Carson Wentz.

What about Louis Rees-Zammit?

The Welsh rugby star is set to sign with the Jacksonville Jaguars, according to ESPN.

It was a bit of a shock to see Louis Rees-Zammit not remain on the Chiefs’ PS after their courage in betting on a young man who barely understood the rules of American football.

For Rees-Zammit, the dream of playing in the NFL remains, albeit for another franchise.
