Jerry Jones has winning argument in power battle over Bill Belichick, it’s perfect, says Stephen A Smith

It has been suggested that the Dallas Cowboys and Bill Belichick are a bad fit. But could the opposite be true?

Sports broadcaster Shannon Sharpe this week declared the Dallas Cowboys and Bill Belichick as a ‘match made in hell’, with speculation growing over the franchise’s head coach position.

Mike McCarthy is under serious pressure after the Cowboys’ first round play-off exit, with the availability of Bill Belichick, and others, adding to the heat.

And yes, Belichick made it his way in New England to have total control and total power, which seems totally at odds with hands-on owner Jerry Jones.

However, the last few years were not kind to Belichick in New England, leading to his departure earlier this month.

Dallas’ roster is not in need of a large scale rebuild, and a simple remit to ‘just coach’ might actually suit Belichick.

Stephen A Smith explains how Belichick can be convinced

Negotiations between Belichick and Jones could devolve into a power battle, which is one reason why many would believe a partnership won’t work.

But it is one Jones can win, simply by pointing out Belichick’s very poor recent record in the NFL Draft and with his coaching staff, argues Stephen A Smith.

Smith told First Take: “He only picked two All-Pros, a kicker and a punter by the way, over the last decade, but also after forcing Tom Brady out and having a guy like Mac Jones, he turns around and essentially ruins this guy’s career, or at the very least next couple of seasons, because he brings in Matt Patricia and Joe Judge as offensive co-ordinators.

“That combined with his talent evaluation shows he has no business making personnel decisions, and that’s also what makes him perfect for Dallas.”

He went on: “If you are Jerry Jones, you’re not going to give up the power. You want the power to pick the players, you want the power to assemble the roster along with Stephen Jones.

“Well guess what, you have an incredibly potent argument to make against Bill Belichick, that’s the last thing he needs to be doing.

“He needs to focus on the players that are given to him and maxing out their potential.

“There’s no other organisation that would try and make that argument against Bill Belichick and win, and there’s no other organisation Bill Belichick should be more receptive to than the Dallas Cowboys, because you already have enough talent on the squad to contend for the Super Bowl… if they had better coaching.”

Smith said this week that Dallas should fire McCarthy and defensive co-ordinator Dan Quinn, and keep quarterback Dak Prescott.
