The Denver Broncos have announced they are cutting former Cowboys defensive end Randy Gregory. The announcement is a blessing in disguise for Jones and the Cowboys, who were criticised for fumbling his contract last year.

According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, the Denver Broncos are cutting pass rusher Randy Gregory. Gregory was a 2015 second-round pick by the Cowboys, but left the franchise during the 2022 offseason after contract issues, and now it appears Jerry Jones has had the last laugh.

Broncos head coach Sean Payton confirmed the news, saying: “Something we felt was just best for our team right now timing-wise.

“It hasn’t been finalized because, typically, before a transaction takes place, there may be some teams interested in a trade, but if any if that came to fruition… We just felt some of our younger players and where we’re going, it was best for our team.”

Gregory signed a signed a five-year, $70 million contract in March 2022. This seasons he has one sack, four solo tackles, and two tackles for loss in four games. Against the Bears this past week he was pulled from the starting lineup and replaced by second-year outside linebacker Nik Bonitto.

Last season he played in just six games with the Broncos last season due to injury and a one-game suspension for a post-match fight.

His release is a blessing in disguise for Jerry Jones and Cowboys

Jones and the Cowboys are bound to feel somewhat smug about the latest news. The Cowboys were widely criticised for fumbling the 30-year-old during contract negotiations with him in 2022.

There’s plenty of speculation and hearsay around the proposed deal. It’s alleged the Cowboys had a deal in place and were firm on what they would pay Gregory. He allegedly agreed to it, before suddenly announcing he’d signed with the Broncos.

We’re now a year and a half removed from that deal and it appears Jones was right to refuse to budge. The Cowboys managed to get an aging star with a sizeable contract off their books at a time when his best years look well behind him.

There doesn’t seem to be much appetite for him around the league either. NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero added that the Broncos had been trying to trade Gregory this week to no avail.

Turns out that bizarre contract situation was a blessing in disguise for Jones after all.
