‘Great player’… Jerry Jones says Dallas Cowboys already have replacement for starter who left in free agency

Dallas lost a key starter and the team’s main left tackle, who protected Dak Prescott’s blindside.

Tyron Smith’s move to the New York Jets came as a shock to the Cowboys Nation.

Fans expected him to sign a new contract with the Dallas Cowboys after becoming a free-agent and continue his good work protecting the quarterback.

But it seems that the Cowboys didn’t have enough money to keep a player like him on the roster. The information comes from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s Clarence Hill.

The left tackle has agreed a deal worth up to $20 million with the Jets. He will have $6.5 million guaranteed and can get $750,000 if he plays 38 per cent of the snaps.

Or, at best, playing 68 per cent of the offensive snaps guarantees him $12 million. Because of these incentives, Dallas realized they couldn’t afford Smith and let him go.

Tyron Smith’s replacement

General manager and owner Jerry Jones, in an interview with Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News, already has in mind the person who should fill Tyron’s role.

Tyler Smith is the new name expected to take over as starting LT for the Cowboys.

“I’d say that’s a good, viable thing…Keep the idea there. Don’t dismiss that idea.”

“Certainly, he’s potentially, I want to say, a great player at left tackle.”

The young offensive tackle was drafted in 2022 and spent his rookie year in that spot in the absence of Tyron Smith, who was injured. However, in 2023, he was swapped to the left guard position, taking part in 942 snaps.

Since there’s still nothing confirmed about the role, the Cowboys could still pick a “homegrown” LT in the Draft.

In addition, it seems that this year there are more left tackle options than guards in the first round, so Dallas may decide to leave Smith in his place and bring in a new piece to take care of Prescott’s blind spot.
