Tyron Smith now resides in a new city for the first time in his NFL career after hitting free agency.

The veteran offensive tackle has signed a deal with the New York Jets worth up to $20 million.

He will now be protecting future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers in the Big Apple.

Smith signed his one-year deal with the Jets after the Dallas Cowboys decided to move on from the 33-year-old.

Smith sends an emotional farewell

America’s Team’s thinking was to look for a younger and healthier alternative.

The ‘Ring of Honor’ caliber player has been plagued with injuries and managed to only play 55% of snaps in the last four seasons.

Moreover, he shared an emotional goodbye with Jerry Jones and the fan base via Instagram.

This tied in with another sad farewell after Leighton Vander Esch announced his predicted forced retirement.

Nonetheless, Smith has secured himself a lucrative one-year deal with the New York franchise.

NFL contracts are often valued very highly but there are multiple triggers and requirements to receive the full amount.

Smith’s new contract breakdown

Albert Breer has made the contract breakdown public.

With Smith’s contract being $20 million, only $2 million of that is his guaranteed salary.

In addition, he has received a $4.5 million signing bonus.

So, before Smith even takes to the field in 2024, he has a financial comfort blanket of $6.5 million.

The Jets have also included playoff and Pro Bowl incentives.

Smith will earn $250,000 per playoff win, with the maximum being $1 million.

If his performances see him earn a Pro Bowl selection, he will be awarded $500k.

However, most of Smith’s incentives are centered around his snap participation.

Jets will pay big money for Smith to stay healthy

If he manages to play only 38% of the Jets offensive snaps, he will only receive $750,000.

On the other hand, if he manages to stay healthy, he could earn a staggering $12 million.

The play time incentives are split into two parts.

The first included snap percentages participation from 38% to 68%, with the latter earning him $5.75 million if met.

In the second section, the snap percentages start from 74% to 98%. The former number would see him earn $1.25 million on top of the money earned at 68%.

If Smith can register the maximum 98%, he will earn all the money totaling the $12 million mentioned.

Understandably, with his previous track record, Smith’s large portion of money relies on him staying healthy.

Can he stay healthy for most of 2024?
