The Dallas Cowboys have had to say goodbye to the heartbeat of their defense.

Leighton Vander Esch has had to confirm his early retirement from the beloved sport due to ongoing medical problems.

The linebacker spoke to the press on Monday confirming his decision to close the chapter on his professional career.

Vander Esch’s career-ending injury

Vander Esch suffered multiple back and neck injuries during the tail end of his career.

Recognizably, he wore the protective neck guard when sporting the Cowboys’ jersey.

During his six seasons with the Cowboys, he only managed to fully complete two seasons.

On October 8th, 2023, the linebacker suffered a repeated neck injury against the San Francisco 49ers.

He was placed on the injured reserve and on November 14th, owner Jerry Jones confirmed the player would miss the remainder of the season.

Last week, America’s Team confirmed that Vander Esch would be released from his two-year deal to free up cap space.

It was strongly reported that he would confirm his retirement at some point during the offseason.

Now it is a harsh reality.

An explosive rookie year

The 2018 first-round pick out of Boise State had a high ceiling.

In his rookie year, he set a rookie franchise record for 140 combined tackles (102 solo), whilst deflecting seven passes and recording two interceptions.

As a result, he was selected in his debut season for the Pro Bowl.

The 28-year-old has been plagued by injuries and is now forced into early retirement in his prime.

Vander Esch said in his press conference, per the team website: “I love the game so much, and my body will not cooperate any longer.”

Cowboys fans take to X

Cowboys’ fans have taken to X to share their reaction to the seemingly inevitable news, which was more of a matter of when not if.

@OregonDCFan4L posted: “You’ll definitely be missed.”

@Pryme72 said: “Gonna miss seeing him terrorize offenses. Was so fun to watch but family and health are far more important. Best of luck to him with this next chapter.”

@holmes915 took a shot at Trent Williams: “Bro may be one of the biggest what ifs ever. He was mounting a great comeback after a really good ‘22 campaign…shame a dirty block ends it all.”

The account holder called Holmes refers to the tackle by the 49ers’ offensive lineman Trent Williams.

Williams pushed the linebacker from behind and endured his neck injury again.

@b_tonci replied to the Cowboys post: “You’ll be missed bro… your strength, determination, leadership. Just stay healthy and enjoy with your family. All the best.”

Vander Esch has made the brave call to put his health first before football.

The former Pro Bowler will now settle down into the quiet life with his family, as he protects more important matters.
