Former NFL players disagree on whether Jerry Jones has given Mike McCarthy the pieces required to win

Depending on what happens this season, Dallas could embark on a new era in 2025 – one with some new faces.

For the Dallas Cowboys, the 2024 season will be all about proving their worth and what they’re here for. Mike McCarthy and Dak Prescott are in very similar positions and will need to show they’re ready to go ‘all-in’.

The head coach is entering his final year with the franchise and seems calm about his own situation. At this year’s NFL meetings, he said: “I don’t see it as more pressure”. I think it’s just the reality of our industry.”

When it comes to the regular season, McCarthy is a coach who has had plenty of success: in each of the last three years, he has reached a 12-5 record to take his team to the playoffs. It’s in the post-season, however, that things get complicated.

Their defeat to the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card round last season has put the HC’s job in jeopardy. But the organization decided to give McCarthy a chance to redeem himself. He kept his job, although without the possibility of extending his contract.

At this point, some questions arise about the choices made by owner Jerry Jones: is his plan to go at full strength for 2024 being executed in the best way? Does McCarthy have enough good players to dream big and save his seat in Dallas?

Is this the end of the McCarthy-Prescott era for the Cowboys?

On Thursday’s edition of the Speak show, James Jones and LeSean McCoy gave different opinions on whether Jerry Jones has given Mike McCarthy enough to succeed or not.

James Jones has faith that Dallas will do the right things this season and believes that the franchise owner is on the right path to winning.

“Mike got everything he need, right?”

“You got a really good defense, you’re gonna draft whatever you need to be able to put in place on the defense and on the offense, right?”

“You need a running back, maybe another receiver because you lost Gallup and you need a linebacker. Other than that, you got Diggs coming back, you got Bland on the other side. You have a really good defense.”

However, when it comes to McCarthy’s job, he recognizes that this year will be his ultimatum – either he wins or he wins.

“Jerry Jones has given you a really, really, really good roster to go out here and win games… But if coach Mike don’t get it done, especially in the playoffs this year, he’s gone.”

“Coach Mike has to deliver in the playoffs and not just one win. He is going to have to get two wins in the playoffs to keep his job out there.”

McCoy agrees with the idea that the HC has enough to make a splash in the league, but Shady’s lack of confidence lies in Prescott.

“What else do you need? You got more than enough.”

“Every year we’re giving Dak Prescott everything he needs to be a successful winner and a quarterback in this league. Regular season does great… When it gets tough, it gets hard, you can’t find him.

At the end of the day, Mike McCarthy and Dak Prescott can hit the field in September for the most decisive season of their careers.
