Dallas Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson was one of the most improved players in the NFL in the 2023 season.

Jake Ferguson stepped up for the Dallas Cowboys last year, showing he can be the man to step into the position Jason Witten successfully filled for so long.

Ferguson spoke this week to NFL Total Access and commented on his focused mindset, which helped set him up for improvement.

“I was locked in on our offense and what I had to do on every play”, Ferguson explained.

Inspired by Travis Kelce and George Kittle

Jake Ferguson added that he is inspired by two long-serving tight ends who represented their teams in the recent Super Bowl.

With Dallas aspiring to reach one in the future, Ferguson knows he will have to play harder every single year, in the same way Travis Kelce and George Kittle do. Kelce is now a three-time Super Bowl champion.

Ferguson explained: “I think it’s a position that every offense needs, you know. Maybe one or even two guys, sometimes even three. I know my rookie season we used four of us!

“I think the more big guys you can put in there and you know, create those mismatches against maybe a smaller safety or corner, that’s going to be game changing.

“Especially when you got guys who play like Travis [Kelce] you know, change the game as a tight end.

“Same with George [Kittle], those guys are really setting a certain level and you know, they’re doing it every single year and they’re doing better every single year, and that’s, that’s something that us young guys definitely strive to be.

“I mean, it’s fun to watch, those guys are changing the game for us.”

Jake Ferguson looking to take another leap

Jake Ferguson has now completed two seasons in the NFL after being drafted as a fourth round pick in 2022.

He is proving good value, establishing himself as a starter, making the 2023 Pro Bowl.

In his rookie season he averaged 10.9 yards per game and scored two touchdowns.

In 2023 his numbers jumped, averaging 44.9 yards per game and scored five touchdowns in the regular season.

In the playoff loss to Green Bay, he was the one bright spot for the Dallas Cowboys. He caught three touchdowns in a single game, with his career-best performance overshadowed by the team’s elimination.
